Blake Cook

Blake Cook

An 18-year-old high school senior is dead and one of his friends is in custody following a series of early-morning collisions on Interstate 5 in Sylmar.

Blake Cook, 18, was exiting the passenger side of a Honda Accord that had come to a stop in traffic lanes after its driver, Eddie Camargo, 20, of Saugus, collided with a big-rig. As he was getting out of the car, Cook was struck and killed by a second big-rig.

The fatal hit-and-run crash occurred Saturday at about 4:20 a.m. California Highway Patrol officers are still looking for the second big-rig and its driver, said Officer Posada of the California Highway Patrol.

Camargo, a 2012 Saugus High School graduate, is in custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

Police records show Camargo had been arrested Jan. 2 and released the next day on $20,000 bond, and that he spent three days in Pitchess South Facility from Feb. 25 to Feb. 27 (probably his sentence associated with January’s felony charge, although that has not been confirmed.)

“There were four vehicles involved,” Posada said, explaining the investigation was still in the preliminary stage, and officers are still trying to find information about the driver of a big rig that fled the scene. “The semi that struck the pedestrian fled the scene.”

A 1997 Toyota Corolla driven by a 27-year-old Palmdale man was driving north on I-5 when it crashed into the Accord, which was blocking two lanes of the freeway. It was not yet clear whether the occupants of the Accord were still in their vehicle when the Corolla hit it.

Camargo did not sustain any injuries, and another 19-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries, according to CHP reports. The driver of the Corolla sustained moderate injuries.

Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identity of the deceased Saturday morning.

Cook, who went to Arroyo Seco and Rio Norte junior high schools, attended Saugus High, Canyon High, Opportunities for Learning and most recently Valencia High School. He transfered out of the William S. Hart Union High School District in January, district officials said Saturday.

Anyone who witnessed the collisions is asked to call the Altadena CHP office at 626-296-8100.

Cook’s friends are arranging a 7 p.m. vigil Saturday at Santa Clarita Central Park in Saugus.

  7. So very sad. My thoughts are with both of their families. The young man who died, and the one in custody. His life will never be the same again either. What a waste of young lives. Hoping the big rig driver turns himself in, as well.

  25. Emily Ball Emily Ball says:

So sad to hear this news. The report says the driver is in custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, not alcohol. We need to remind our children to only exit a vehicle into traffic when it is safe to do so.

  26. Sad for the family but as Ethan mentioned, there were public warning signs that went ignored. We have to police each other up and not make excuses if we want to save young lives.

  27. Mikee Wade Mikee Wade says:

What makes this even worse for me to hear about is the fact that Valencia High School just had its “Every 15 Minutes” program, and one day later a teen in SCV is killed due to being in the car with someone under the influence :(

  28. Mike Wade I wish kids would learn with the every 15 minutes program!!

  29. It’s a tragic and super sad!

  30. Nobody deserves to die that young. Rest in Peace bro

  31. Oh no. Please no more young lives lost to auto accidents. :(

  32. Why do kids get in the car with someone who is under the influence????
It’s so sad! I feel bad for the kid being hit by the big rig and being killed! And at 4:20 am. It’s just so SAD! BAD DECISIONS ALL THE WAY AROUND

  33. So sad! Praying for the family!

  34. Chris Lynn Chris Lynn says:

  48. So very sad. I love this family and my thoughts and prayers are with them during this painful time.

  49. Bart Hackett says:

I feel bad for this kids family. But….,

This kid ran around with a pile of wannabes suburban jackasses who call themselves “Mint Fam”. They fancy themselves real inner city “gangstas”, and imitate what they think is the life of a bad ass. Posting pictures of themselves drinking Bombay, smoking weed, pointing daddy’s guns at the camera, etc. Invinsible, right? WRONG. Apparently the Grim Reaper is a actual gangsta. Should be interesting to see what charges the driver faces. Snort a few lines before headed back to “the hood” in the SCV? We shall see.

  50. If you followed what he and friends claimed to be up to on social media, this was almost inevitable.

  51. Donna Blaire Donna Blaire says:

This breaks my heart!!!! So senseless and now the family will never ever be the same:( I am so, so sorry for Blake’s Family ; many prayers to the family

  52. Cecill Cornell Holguin and SCVTV Santa Clarita this is devastating I actually am a manager at Macys Valencia and we just had a meeting with the store manager today on the different charities we raise money when ringing up customers . The local charity is to donate what ever money our customer wants to donate to and we have picked Central Park . Macys will match dollar to dollar. I explained how central Park actually has a memorial of tree stumps for every teenager killed in a traffic related accident, i myself have had quite a few friends pass away to that. I think its a great place to take the teens in hs as a field trip to see the dozens that we have lost . Its Great way to keep Central Park funded , so if any are in the town center mall area please stop by in. Its tragic to hear of this and as long as we make kids aware of accidents and drugs and how easily the percent could be anyone. Prayers to blakes family and friends

  53. OMG god bless your family. Rest in piece the lord would hold you forever

  54. I’ll never forget that smile on his face and ridiculous raps. All Blake Cook wanted was peace like wiz khalifa. Too young. He would want everyone to keep bumpin UOENO and biggitiy bangs. Love you homie

  55. God, please give peace to all involved, and please let justice be served were deserved.

  56. God, please give peace to all involved, and please let justice be served were deserved.

  57. Delyn Spiers says:

I am so sorry for your loss. This is just heart wrenching….I used to babysit all of the Cook children when they were very young. My entire families thoughts are with your family during these difficult times.

  58. Quinn says:

I love you Blake, I’ll never forget you. You only had that nose piercing for 6 hours, but it’s okay because you’re rocking it up in designer heaven. I love you forever

  59. Cathy Vega Cathy Vega says:

He ran across the freeway !!! If the driver would have stopped The driver would not have been at fault ..

  60. Cathy Vega Cathy Vega says:

Who are we kidding there was no drinking and driving here .. There was an under the influence of drugs ! Then again society has said marijuana does not kill think again !!! But many will play a blind eye and say marijuana is harmless when you drive !

  61. Delyn Spiers says:

I wish that people would remember that someones son just died. Whatever our opinions are on the circumstances surrounding this tragic death…we should remember that a family is grieving for the loss of their cherished loved one. Please respect that and leave comments written in love and remembrance not anger or hate. Thank you.

    • Mary Rivera says:

Blake Cook was a son and a brother and a friend. Everyone has there memories of Blake. Everyone needs to remember that his parent’s just lost there son and his brother and sister just lost there brother. Understand this family got the most awful news that a family would never want to hear. The Cook Family will need a lot of support. Pray for this family. Thank You.

  62. I knew Edie from Saugus high… we would say hi once in a while.
