Junior Black and Senior Blue Teams Take Top Honors at Summit in Florida.
| Tuesday, Jun 3, 2014

Two teams from the SCV All-Stars competitive cheer program emerged on top of the nation’s best competition, winning national championships in their divisions of the Summit Varsity All Levels National Championship held recently in Orlando, Fla.

“I can’t tell you how excited we are about it,” said Dan Cowan, Business Director for the SCV All-Stars (www.scvallstars.com). “We had actually five teams go back there, and of the five teams that went back there we had two national champions, a second-place team and a third-place team. In the world of cheerleading, this is phenomenal.”

The championship-winning SCV All-Stars Junior Black team consisted of 17 cheer athletes ranging from 9 to 14 years old. The other winning team, the SCV All-Stars Senior Blue, had 20 participants ages 10 to 18.

Both teams were coached by SCV All-Stars Director Danielle Wick and Aaron Yee.

“These young athletes worked tirelessly to get to the SUMMIT and then to the Finals, and they gave it their all — they left it all on the mat,” Wick said. “I could not be happier for these athletes who have learned firsthand the values of dedication, hard work and perseverance.”

Cowan said the SUMMIT, held May 3-4 at Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, featured the nation’s top 470 teams competing at various levels. The athletes practice year-round, and the competitive season typically starts in November and culminates with the SUMMIT.

“This is what teams shoot for, the Summit,” Cowan said. “This is what it’s all about.”

On the first day of the competition, the field is narrowed in each level, with the top 10 teams moving on to compete on the second day.

“Synchronization and timing are very important,” Cowan said. “What set our teams apart is what we call our stunts and pyramids. They do some amazing flips and turns and twists, and our pyramids blew the minds of the people who were there.”

Cowan added: “We couldn’t be more proud of the effort put forth by our cheer athletes at the SUMMIT. In the sport of cheerleading, it’s a huge deal.”
