A robbery occurred near the 24400 block of Magic Mountain Parkway, Valencia. The victim was sitting in her parked vehicle in the parking lot. Without warning a female adult opened her front passenger door and grabbed her purse. The suspect fled the location in a vehicle which was waiting for her. A battery causing serious injury, related to a hate crime, occurred near the 25900 block of McBean Parkway. The victim, a male black adult, was at the location, eating dinner, and enjoying the evening, talking to other patrons. He was having a conversation with another patron. Two male white adults with shaved heads interrupted the victim several times as he conversed with the other patron. The victim left the location and began to walk towards to his vehicle in the parking lot. The victim was approached by the same two men from inside the location. Both suspects’ began to yell racial epithet at the victim. The victim tried to enter his vehicle and leave the location. Both suspects rushed the victim and began to punch him several times in the face and head. The suspects continued to make racial epithets towards the victim. After a brief struggle, both suspects’ fled the location in an unknown direction. The case is currently under active investigation by Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Detective Bureau.

A burglary occurred near the 23400 block of Valencia Boulevard. A male suspect wearing a white/light brown plaid shirt was able to pry open the back door to the location and was able to gain entry. A vehicle burglary occurred near the intersection of Fairview Drive/McBean Parkway. The victim parked his vehicle at the location and locked if before entering the area. When he returned, he observed his front passenger window was shattered and his personal items were missing. Stolen were an Apple “MacBook Pro 13” and his wallet including his driver’s license.

A grand theft occurred near the 23200 block of Magic Mountain Parkway. A male suspect drove a white van (Ca Lic#88842M1) into the location and began to steal diesel fuel from rental trucks. The suspect(s) van was equipped with a large container able to hold a few thousand gallons of fuel. Deputies arrived while the suspect was still at the location, but were unable to locate him. A check of the area by responding deputies was met with negative results.

We had three shoplifting incidents at local businesses. In all three incidents, the suspects were arrested by our patrol station personnel.

This week I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about incidents I see on a regular basis. Thefts from vehicles where items are left in plain view or the vehicles are left unlocked. An unlocked car is a temptation for thieves, so the easiest security measure you can take is to lock your car at all times. At home, at work, at the grocery store parking lot-no matter how briefly you’re away from your car, lock it up. Improve security by eliminating a big reason thieves break in to vehicles: hide valuables (or take them with you) whenever you leave your car. Items of interest to thieves include purses, wallets, electronic devices, CDs, computers, briefcases, and any personal documents that could be used to steal your identity. A spare key on your car’s body is a security risk. Experienced criminals know where to look to find a hidden key. If you’re prone to locking your keys in your car, or losing your car keys, put a spare key your wallet or purse instead. The last word about vehicle security is: location. Park your car near lamp posts and/or security cameras, as well as near areas with high foot traffic, i.e., stairwells or mall entrances in parking garages. Choose a well-lit area. Whether you’re parking on the street or in a garage, opt for well-lit areas. Park under garage security lights or street lamps; thieves are less likely to target your vehicle if they can be seen easily and will draw attention to themselves. Stay away from parking lot and garage exits. Thieves are more likely to try to steal cars close to the parking lot or garage exits, because they will have a faster getaway. Try to park in the middle of a row of cars in a heavily trafficked area of the lot or garage. Making sure your car blends in is a good strategy to avoid car theft.

I believe if you follow these few, but important steps, you can lower your chances of becoming a victim and having your valuables stolen from inside your vehicle.
