Service projects will be underway all day Thursday at VFW Post 6885 in Canyon Country and American Legion Post 507 in Newhall, followed by an evening of reflection at the Westfield Valencia Town Center, as HandsOn Santa Clarita hosts its second annual 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance.
“Last year’s theme was focusing on first responders, and this year the focus in on active military and veterans,” said Seema Shah, executive director of HandsOn Santa Clarita. “They serve us every day… This is our day to serve them or at least make a commitment to serve in another way.”
About 50 Santa Clarita Valley residents are scheduled to participate in the service projects, while hundreds are expected to attend the evening of remembrance, she said.
Residents are invited to attend the family-friendly evening event, where they can meet military personnel and Santa Clarita Valley first responders, view first responder and military vehicles and enjoy food vendors and exhibitors before the tribute ceremony.
“Our theme this year is an ‘I will’ statement,” Shah said. “People (can) commit to serving their community, their family or their school in some way by writing on a whiteboard ‘I will’ and filling in the blank.”
Senator Steve Knight and City Council Member Dante Acosta are scheduled to speak at the ceremony, which also includes a presentation of two 9/11 tribute videos made by Saugus High School students.
“On the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we pay tribute to the victims and others we wish to honor,” read a statement on the event page of the HandsOn website. “It is a fitting and appropriate gift to the many that lost their lives and the countless others who were injured or came to the aid of those in need.”
The evening of remembrance is free and open to the public. The event is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. at Westfield Valencia Town Center with the ceremony set to begin at 7 p.m.
