The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team will welcome more than 25 former players — as well as a bevy of fans and community supporters — to its inaugural Alumni Game, taking place at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.
The Cougar Cage at the Valencia Campus will once again host some of COC’s very best women’s basketball players from throughout the past 20 years, as they take the court in a game benefitting the program they once called their own.
Tickets will be available at the door for $3 with all proceeds benefiting the College of the Canyons women’s basketball program.
Several of head coach Greg Herrick’s former players are scheduled to participate, including 2010 California Community College Co-Player of the Year Ashley Wakefield, and former COC All-State Team Honorees Leslie Ortiz, La Cresha Clark, Ofolangi Mailangi and Kaipresha Price.
Ashley Wakefield remains COC’s first and only California Community College Player of Year winner. During the 2009-2010 season, Wakefield averaged 18.6 points, 12.9 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game.
In addition to being a former All-State selection, LaCresha Clark holds several COC women’s basketball records including: most points scored in a season (722), most steals in a game (13), most steals in a season (183), and most assists in a game (28).
Leslie Ortiz, is a two-time conference MVP and All-State selection at the guard position who helped lead the Cougars to 30-6 overall record during the 2006-2007 season. Ortiz is COC’s all-time leader for most assists in a season with 390.
In addition to her All-State honors in 2002, Ofolangi Mailangi was also recognized for her academic achievements in the classroom. That same season, Mailangi averaged 13.2 points per game and led the Cougars in rebounding with 10.8 boards per game.
Kaipresha Price was an All-State selection, leading the state in assists in 2003 for a Cougar squad that led the state in team scoring.
The Alumni Game will serve as a precursor to the upcoming 2014-2015 COC women’s basketball season. The Cougars will open the season at the Mt. San Antonio College Tip-Off Tournament in Walnut, California on Friday, Nov. 7.
