[KHTS] – The City of Santa Clarita released the draft Soledad Canyon Corridor Plan Thursday, and are asking residents for their input before the plan is finalized.
The corridor plan will help guide future development and uses within the area’s commercial corridor, according to a news release from the city.
Santa Clarita residents and business owners are invited to view the plan here and provide additional comment using the blog function on the site, before the plan is presented to the Planning Commission later this year, according to city officials.
The City is also hosting a presentation on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Public Library, at which the draft plan will be reviewed, according to the news release. Area residents and business owners are encouraged to attend and provide feedback.
Beginning in September 2013, residents and business owners along Soledad Canyon Road, between Camp Plenty Road and Solamint Road, were invited to public workshops to provide input and feedback to help the city develop the draft plan.
The city also sought feedback from the community via an online survey. The draft plan does not propose any new development, but serves as a planning tool to guide future changes when desired by property owners.
Those unable to attend the presentation can still review the draft document and share comments at the project’s interactive blogging website.
About the Corridor Plan:
Santa Clarita residents have made it clear they want a well planned approach to managing growth. They don’t want continued suburban sprawl paving over open space and sensitive hillside areas. Instead, they want to improve vacant or run down properties with high quality “infill” projects to provide new jobs, new living opportunities and new stores and services. This type of planning is called “Smart Growth” and it is the basis for Santa Clarita’s new General Plan.
Smart Growth is a national movement consisting of the application of a series of principles to planning and public space administration strategies in support of development that is environmentally sensitive, economically viable, community oriented, and sustainable.
Smart growth builds on Santa Clarita’s history and natural settings.
Instead of new development that looks similar to everywhere else, it promotes interesting, unique neighborhoods and districts, which reflects our values and heritage.

The question is; How many of the existing businesses will be put out of business if the City requires that the landowners make aesthetic upgrades to businesses and shopping centers in Canyon Country. The costs will be passed on to the business owners, and as happened recently at the shopping centers at the corner of Soledad/Sand Cyn and Soledad /Whites Cyn, Several businesses could not pay the increased rents as a result of façade improvements, even though they survived the worst of the recession
