The owner of the Santa Clarita Motel has been approved to build a 42-room hotel in Old Town Newhall.
“It’s an exciting project in the heart of Old Town Newhall,” said Ben Jarvis, associate planner for the city of Santa Clarita.
The 2- and 3-story Luxen Hotel Newhall will take up about a half-acre of area at the northwest corner of Railroad Avenue and 5th Street, across from Newhall Ice. The street address is 24219 Railroad Ave.
Jarvis said the hotel is mostly two stories with a 3-story tower element at the corner of 5th and Railroad. He described the architectural style as a hybrid of Western, Victorian and main-street commercial, consistent with the city’s vision for the area.
He said the hotel is “permitted by right” because it conforms with the Downtown Newhall Specific Plan, so it doesn’t need further approval by the Planning Commission.
The developer, Ikon Hospitality Group, still needs to go through plan-check and pull permits before construction can begin.
Nearby buildings including Roger Dunn Golf shop and the so-called “red Signal buildings” on 6th Street are unaffected.
