A gym trip and an alleged joy ride led to a felony arrest Tuesday, according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials.
Dylan Altman, 20, of Santa Clarita, was arrested on charges he took a car without the owner’s consent and possessed drug paraphernalia.
A man working out Monday at an L.A. Fitness gym in Valencia left his duffel bag on the counter, with his keys, wallet and other personal items in the bag around 10:30 a.m., according to Sheriff’s Department arrest records.
The victim reportedly went to get something from his bag around 11 a.m. and noticed his keys were gone, as well as his car.
Altman allegedly saw the bag, took the victim’s keys and then drove the car to North Hollywood, officials said.
The car was immediately entered into the system as stolen, according to Sheriff’s Department officials.
Police officers with the North Hollywood Division of the LAPD found Altman asleep in the back of the car, near the intersection of Denny Avenue and Collins Street in the early morning hours.
A syringe and a burnt spoon indicative of heroin use allegedly were found in the vehicle, according to the report.
LAPD officers saw the stolen car had been reported, and then alerted Sheriff’s Station deputies who took the suspect into custody, officials said.
He is due in court Thursday, and being held in lieu of $25,000 bail at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The incident prompted a caution Sheriff’s Station officials frequently mention in their weekly crime reports.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re at a place of business or near your home,” said Deputy Josh Dubin of the station’s Crime Prevention Unit, “you should always secure your possessions and lock up your belongings.”
