Nearly 600 cars were screened Friday night in a California Highway Patrol DUI checkpoint conducted in the Santa Clarita Valley, CHP officials said Tuesday.
Zero people were arrested and nobody was found to be driving under the influence, said Officer John Lutz of the Newhall CHP station.
The checkpoint was conducted at the intersection of The Old Road and Constitution Avenue in Stevenson Ranch, he said.
The location was set to be within the Santa Clarita Valley but outside city of Santa Clarita limits.
Six people were arrested for DUI’s this past weekend, according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials.
The goal of the DUI Checkpoint is to create awareness among the motoring public, to deter people from driving under the influence, and to keep the streets safe for all.
Although checkpoints tend to reduce the number of drinking drivers on the road, the CHP will apprehend DUI drivers who fail to heed warnings, officials said.
Even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically, the psychological influence a checkpoint has on the motoring public is invaluable, according to a CHP statement.
Sobriety checkpoints are conducted in accordance to the guidelines for checkpoint operations outlined in the Supreme Court decision, Ingersol vs. Palmer.

Yet one more example of an illegal checkpoint that yielded absolutely nothing except a substantial waste of manpower, money, and police resources.

Just a thought…about 1.5 years ago an innocent “sober” man was killed in Stevenson Ranch on The Old Road on his way to dinner by a resident who lives less than a couple blocks away from the accident who had “allegedly” been determined to be under the influence of alcohol at the time the accident occurred. This mans family will never be able to say “I love you pop” or even give him a hug…they have to live the rest of their lives knowing they’ll never see him again. Had there been one of these so-called “Illegal” check points…this man “could” still be alive today to see his family, and the individual would have been cited and fined and hopefully had learned a lesson rather than doing time. (You all have read the story on line). I wonder if the mans family thinks these check points are a waste of time and tax paying dollars. I bet it cost more money in hospital bills to try and save this mans life and the cost of court fees to try and defend the individual than it does to run one of these check points every now and again.
Yes, that is all fine and well, except that the checkpoints don’t catch anyone at all – drunk or not – and never have. In short – THEY DON’T WORK.
