Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby urges residents to remove dry and brittle Christmas trees from their homes to avoid any fire danger.

“We’re now into the second week of the new year, so any Christmas trees still set up inside homes presents a serious fire danger,” he said.

Tuesday morning, Los Angeles County firefighters responded to a tragic house fire in the City of Azusa, caused by an unattended candle in the living room near a very dry Christmas tree.  The home was a total loss, and now the residents need to find a new place to live.

“This fire could have been prevented. This is a terrible way for this family to start the New Year,” added Osby. “The Los Angeles County Fire Department would like to remind everyone about the importance of removing Christmas tree from your homes before they become dry and brittle.  Also, make sure that your home has a working smoke detector. Seventy percent of house fires occur in homes without a working detector.”

To schedule the curbside pickup of your Christmas tree, contact your local waste management company. Learn how to stay safe all year round at www.fire.lacounty.gov.

There are a number of Christmas trees still sitting on the curb in my neighborhood (Sierra Hills tract). Our trash pickup is normally Thursday, was shifted to Friday for Christmas week and New Year’s week, and it appears Waste Management picked up trees the day after Christmas and January 2nd and that’s all. Who takes down the tree Christmas night?
