Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is taking the lead on initiating the dialog regarding the appropriate protocols for concussion diagnosis and treatment by hosting the Santa Clarita Valley Concussion Conference.
A brain injury can have serious ramifications so appropriate diagnosis and treatment of concussions is critical to recovery.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty around proper diagnosis and treatment protocols for people who sustain concussions,” said Glenn Dabatos, PT, Director of Rehabilitation Services at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. “Our objective for this conference is to help members of our community develop a common understanding for best practices in concussion diagnosis and follow-up care.”
The event will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Henry Mayo Center located on the hospital’s campus. This free conference is open to the community.
Additional objectives include:
Educating parents, coaches and community members on the dangers of traumatic brain
injury·
Informing medical providers (doctors, nurses, physical therapists) on appropriate concussion
diagnosis and treatment.
Developing consensus among providers, coaches and athletic trainers as to the steps that should be
taken before a concussion patient is allowed to resume normal activities. Following presentations by physicians who have expertise in concussion diagnosis and treatment, a panel comprised of physicians, athletic trainers and local coaches will review and discuss information presented at the conference and answer questions from the audience.

What a thorough and professional announcement.
Thanks for organizing this event. Will there be an outline or schedule for the program ? This would enable people
Who may not be able to attend for the whole 3 1/2 hours to zero in on subjects of most interest.
In our practice
we also see a significant increase in concussions and mild
Brain injuries resulting from skateboard, bicycle and motorcycle
injuries. If not already planned I would encourage some discussion and presentation that would warn of those risks and encourage preventative efforts.
Thanks to Henry Mayo Newhall and the participants
for their efforts.
