1930 - Telephone switchboard operator Louise Gipe, heroine of the 1928 St. Francis Dam disaster, tries & fails to kill herself over an unrequited love [story]
Louise Gipe

Adding insult to injury and death, the surviving members of Johnnie Lee Greenback’s family have been issued an eviction notice.

Johnnie was killed and his father, Sonny Greenback, was wounded when 25-year-old Jessica Greenback allegedly shot both on Sunday. Sonny Greenback told SCVNews Wednesday that apartment managers have given his family three days to vacate their apartment on Danielson Street in Canyon Country, where the shooting took place. Sonny lives there with his surviving son, age 23, and daughter, age 5.

He said he discovered the eviction notice Tuesday at about 10 p.m. when he returned to his apartment after taking his dog for a walk.

“I thought it was a note from the neighbors saying ‘sorry for what happened,’ but it was an eviction notice,” Sonny Greenback said.

He said the eviction notice cites “illegal activity” – presumably the murder – and “incurable breach” as the cause of eviction.

He believes it might also relate to a civil case he won recently against the apartment complex.

“About nine months ago I had parked out in front of the manager’s office when I went to renew my lease,” Greenback said. “It was really windy and a tree fell on my car.”

The managers said it was “an act of God” and refused to pay for the damages. A few months later, Greenback filed a civil suit against them and won, he said.

“I feel it’s very related.”

Greenback has lived in the complex for 10 years and never planned to leave.

“My son took his last breaths here, and I plan to do the same,” said Greenback. “I’m not leaving.”

Close friends of the family have set up a memorial fund for Johnnie Lee Greenback, who was an artist.

Donations can be taken to any Wells Fargo Bank to help defray funeral costs and cover living expenses for Sonny, who is recovering from his injury, and for Sonny’s surviving children.

Also, a GoFundMe account has been set up [here].

Cheri Callaway, a family friend, said a prayer vigil will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the corner of Sandy Street and Jakes Way in Canyon Country.

  7. This is just awful, whoever runs those apartments damn well knows that this family just suffered a massive loss… but let’s not evict those doing illegal activities.

  8. Wrong on many levels especially considering the trash they allow to rent in that and many other complexes they “manage”.

Oh, sorry I thought this was his doing. I explained what RiverPark was doing and he said he was going to look into it. My apologies and much respect for your article and donation. I wish they would run the story but, who knows. Thank you again. I’m Johnnie and Jessica’s step mom and I appreciate you.

  18. That’s like closing the barn after the horse is out.

  19. So deplorable. That girl had a mental disease and was very sick in her head. Her father should not be punished for that. Her father helped many people in his life and is a truly good human being. This is horrible.

  20. I worked for this property management company for 6 years. They would rent to whom ever they could to fill up vacancies. Then find any reason to boot them. Very sad. there are stabbings, drug deals, etc. Yet they get to stay because they pay. Not necessarily on time or with legit hard earned money. But they get to stay. Very sad. My heart aches for that family.

  21. Sonny Sunking Greenback anything you need man. You know we’re family and we stand by you. We love you man.

  22. I knew you needed to see this babe. I gotta keep you posted with the info I see. I love you chicka

  23. This is horrible! It is wrong on so many levels!

  24. Its crazy to think that after you’ve been shot, son killed, daughter in jail ….now you have to find a new place to live…in 3 days!!???!!! That’s just nuts. Poor guy! He has a little daughter to think about let alone try to find another place to live. It wasn’t his fault!!

  25. Rest in peace brother, haven’t seen you since the old village days. I would just pop up and have some weed to smoke out with haha. Glad to have met you.

Who is the management company? We should all call them have hundreds of people per day call and politely express our outrage. Publicly shame the company.

  31. Laura Mathis Laura Mathis says:

What a bunch of bs … This is some messed up crap … Worst thing to do it kick them while there down …these should be illegal …

  32. Ilyene Nieto – we are deeply saddened by your loss, and for what your family has gone through and will continue to go through in the days/years ahead.

  33. J Allen says:

That whole area has been WELL known for crime, gangs and drug activity since the 90’s!! A real sh**hole! Whole city needs to be cleaned up–I lived in CC for 20yrs, leaving in 2009 and cannot believe the trash on that side of town now!

  34. J Allen says:

Whole of CC has become a trash pile. I lived there for 20 yrs, leaving in 2009–Jakes Way and all that area was WELL known for crime, drugs and gangs back in the 90’s. Serious clean up needs to be done–the city is to blame IMO…they built up the west side to high standards and let CC go to hell in a hand basket.

  35. Jay Allen says:

All of CC has turned into a trash town. I lived there for 20 yrs, leaving in 2009. Jakes Way and all that area was WELL known for crime, drugs and gangs in the 90’s. It needs serious cleanup!!! I blame the city for turning the west side into plush upper class and letting the east side rot in hell! Don’t miss it ONE BIT!

  36. Horrible! This property management company is the scum of the earth. Absolutely no compassion for victims of this tragedy. The company is GHP Management http://www.ghpmgmt.com Geoff Palmer is the owner. Call, write, post, share whatever needs to be done to spread the word about this horrid corporation. And please donate and support this family. They now need money to bury their loved one and move or fight this ridiculous eviction.

  37. Mary Cook Mary Cook says:

The notice they received is called a Cure or Quit. It means, no more illegal activities (cure) or eviction will be initiated. The alternative being that the residents can turn in their keys (quit). So…they aren’t really being evicted so much as given a very stern final warning.

  38. Some of you may know this family and those that don’t , you’ll never know what all that lost, way to many.Paul and I are so sorry for another loss your family has to go threw.praying for sonny and the family.its know ones fault but the one who did it not fathers or brothers so don’t judge.the family are very good people.

Sonny, use any money you get to move your son and daughter to a safer neighborhood. Especially that little girl.

My husband died in an apt. but I moved my kids and myself to a house and always felt my husband was with us at the new house.

Don’t feel tied to that apt. A fresh start is good for the whole family.

I pray Gods peace for you and your family.

  54. If it was me, I would offer a few months rent free while they recover from such a tragedy!

  55. Karen Ehrlich-Christie says:

Sonny, get a lawyer, this is so wrong on so many levels. It’s illegal to retaliate against tenants who stand up for their rights and I am not sure, even if these reasonse were technically valid, that they can go with the 3 day notice option. I know the family is going through a lot right now, but get a lawyer and don’t let them get an eviction judgement by default.

  56. Ilyene Nieto so sorry for your loss. You guys should seriously post this on reddit.com There are so many people in that community that won’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call that scum property management company and they have been known to fundraise for worthy causes, raising tens of thousands of dollars in a day.

Please help the family with funeral costs. Johnnie was an amazingly sweet and wonderful person and deserves a proper burial. I hope the management company has a change of heart and leave them be in the wake of this tragedy. Thank you all.
