As we begin the warm days of summer, I want to encourage you and your family to enjoy our city trails, parks, pools and facilities. These wonderful amenities, including our Sports Complex, Aquatic Center, skate park, gymnasium and hiking trails are some of the best aspects of living in Santa Clarita.
This month gets off to a great start with the Fourth of July celebration with some terrific hometown events. The annual Fourth of July parade is held at 9 a.m. in the Newhall and Valencia areas of our city and draws thousands every year. The 2015 parade theme is “Santa Clarita: Living the American Dream,” and the parade grand marshal is Leon Worden, 2015 SCV Man of the Year. For parade route information along with the parade lineup and other parade information, please visit SCVParade.com.
If you enjoy a good morning run, you should definitely consider checking out the Santa Clarita Runners Club 5K/10K run-walk. The 10K run starts at 7 a.m. and the 5K begins at 8 a.m., both at Newhall Park. The race course follows part of the Fourth of July parade route. There’s also a “fun run” event for the kids. More information and sign-ups are available at scrunners.org.
What Fourth of July would be complete without a fireworks show? The city of Santa Clarita hosts an exciting, free fireworks show at the Westfield Valencia Town Center beginning at 9:15 p.m. The colorful display is a great way to cap off a fun day of festivities. You can also enjoy a simultaneous soundtrack broadcast live on KHTS-AM 1220. More information about the fireworks show is available at santa-clarita.com/arts.
I hope that you and your family enjoy a safe, fun-filled and happy Fourth of July. Feel free to contact me anytime at mmclean@santa-clarita.com.
Marsha McLean is mayor of the city of Santa Clarita.
