Assemblyman Scott Wilk

Assemblyman Scott Wilk has introduced legislation to name the Golden Valley Road Bridge over State Route 14 in the city of Santa Clarita the “Connie Worden-Roberts Memorial Bridge.” State Sen. Sharon Runner is a principal co-author.

Connie Worden-Roberts demonstrated extraordinary service to our community and she was known as the Santa Clarita Valley’s ‘Road Warrior,’” said Wilk, R-Santa Clarita. “Connie was an early visionary and tireless advocate for the Golden Valley Road Bridge project, so it seemed appropriate to honor her legacy by naming this very special bridge after her.”

Assembly Concurrent Resolution 89 was introduced June 18.

Said Runner, R-Palmdale: “Connie Worden-Roberts fought courageously for issues important to the city of Santa Clarita for decades, working to make it one of the best places to live in the state. She gave her all to her community and deserves to have her contributions recognized. I am grateful I was able to learn from her and am thrilled to co-author ACR 89 with Assemblyman Wilk.”

“I know my mom would be deeply honored to be recognized in this way,” said Worden-Roberts’ son, SCVTV President Leon Worden. “She gave a good part of her life to making sure our community had the infrastructure we needed as we grew. It’s why she helped create a city and it’s why she pushed to complete the cross-valley connector, even when it would have been a lot easier just to give up.”

Santa Clarita City Council members voted in April to ask the state to name the bridge for Worden-Roberts.

“I think this is a small thing to do for such a grand and great lady,” said Laurene Weste, a Santa Clarita City Council member. “We don’t want work to be forgotten and we want to draw attention to the history of how things were accomplished.”

Worden-Roberts championed the development of the valley’s transportation network for nearly four decades,  according to the news release. She served as the vice-chair of the city of Santa Clarita Formation Committee and served on the city’s first Planning Commission.

“She really was a road warrior,” Weste said. “She fought to get improvements, to get funding, to get bridges that needed repairs and knew every aspect of transportation.”

Worden-Roberts also served as chairwoman of the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles County, founder of the Valley Industry Association, former chairwoman of the board and director of the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce and as a member of many more community organizations, according to the news release.

Worden-Roberts died Aug. 12, 2014 at age 83.

“She was remarkable in every way and this is just a very small aspect,” Weste said. “Without her having been here not only would roadways have suffered, I’m not sure we would have been a city today.”

I don’t care who she is, go name some new road after her.

The road has been Golden Valley since I was a kid and it ended at a hillside at Green Mountain. No one from the city ever cared about our little area until a few years back when they extended the road to Sierra Highway.

  2. Why does the city have this obsession with changing street names? Get over it!

  3. They aren’t renaming the road it says they are naming the bridge after her

  4. Golden Valley Road is not being renamed. The bridge itself will be named in honor of Connie Worden-Roberts.

  5. Duane Harte Duane Harte says:

Good grief people, they are dedicating the bridge, not renaming the road!

  6. Jim Oge Jr Jim Oge Jr says:

Not trying to sound mean, but let’s make some bills that will make a better place to live. It’s cute and all but we need to be productive here.

    • If you every meant this woman you would 100% on board with the idea! She was always working to better the SCV, and I would vote to name a road, building or any bridge after her. And I don’t think you are being mean, I understand the frustration, but if anyone did work hard to make the SCV better it was Connie Worden-Roberts. She worked all the time, even in her later years she would volunteer her time.

I don’t think we need a bill just out her name on it

    • Bridges over state highways (such as State Route 14) are in state jurisdiction, and that means Caltrans. Namings of state highways and bridges require legislation to tell Caltrans what to do. The city can’t just go out and do it in an SRA (State Responsibility Area).

  7. The woman work her whole like for Santa Clarita, it’s not a hugh cost to put up a sign to thank the woman! GREAT IDEA! LOVE IT!!!
