Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is launching a new diabetes management program for Santa Clarita Valley residents.
The program offers self-care management education to inpatients, outpatients and their families, hospital staff, and community members.
The curriculum focuses on three key areas: basic diabetes education; nutrition; and medications. Instruction from dedicated diabetes educators is provided to members of the community once a month, with morning and evening sessions offered at no charge.
In addition, diabetes educators provide one-on-one instruction to newly diagnosed diabetes inpatients, and patients with severely uncontrolled Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes, according to Dee Rickett, Senior Director of New Programs at Henry Mayo. Educators use an evidence-based teaching model promoted by the American Diabetes Association.
On average, there are 35 patients identified with diabetes each day at Henry Mayo.
“We visit patients and conduct an assessment of their needs related to knowledge and self-management of diabetes,” Rickett said. “Educating patients about managing their medical conditions supports our core value of safety.”
Diabetes educators will work with the Santa Clarita Valley community and various organizations to promote diabetes education. Henry Mayo’s diabetes education is already being presented at quarterly heart health fairs held at the Newhall and Canyon Country Community centers.
“There is a huge need in the community and nationally for this type of education,” Rickett said. “This is an added layer of service that we provide that aligns with our mission statement.”
