Original story:
A forest fire erupted Friday night near the Mountain High ski resort in Wrightwood.
Named the Pine Fire, it was first reported shortly after 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Angeles Crest Highway and Big Pines Highway.
By midnight an estimated 120 acres of heavy timber had been blackened. The fire was burning uphill and threatening structures. Approximately 200 fire fighters were on scene from Angeles National Forest, CAL FIRE, and the San Bernardino and Los Angeles County fire departments. They were staging in the Mountain High Resort parking lot.
As of 1:30 a.m. the figure was 125 acres and fire activity had diminished, according to L.A. County Fire, which said its nighttime water-dropping helicopters were concentrating on the Table Mountain Observatory and the surrounding area throughout the night.
Mandatory evacuations were imposed. Hundreds of people, including several dozen Girl Scouts, were evacuated from campgrounds.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that 130 of the 300 campers were deaf and hearing-impaired children, and that they were safely evacuated from Lion’s Camp with no injuries. Also evacuated: Verdugo Campground, AFY Campground, Christian Summer Camp.
Caltrans has closed SR-2 from the Islip Saddle to the L.A. County line.
Sheriff units were sent from the Santa Clarita Valley, Lancaster, Temple City, San Dimas, Walnut and Industry stations.
