U.S. Rep. Steve Knight spoke at a press conference Wednesday morning to announce that he will be part of a Republican effort to understand and resolve general issues between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
The Law Enforcement Task Force, which is backed by the Republican Policy Committee, was formed in the wake of the recent tensions between various police departments and communities across the country. Eleven lawmakers with backgrounds in law enforcement, including Rep. Knight, will meet in the coming months to gather relevant information and offer recommendations to local departments.
“Our goal is to make sure police departments have the resources they need and information on the best practices available to them so that they can be effective in their communities,” said Knight, R-Palmdale.
Representative Knight served in the Los Angeles Police Department for eighteen years, including some time on the elite Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums (CRASH) unit, while concurrently on the Palmdale City Council. He left his police officer position to serve in the California State Legislature, where he focused largely on public safety.
The Task Force will hold hearings in Washington, D.C. and in locations around the United States starting in September.
Knight represents the Santa Clarita Valley in the House of Representatives.
