1934 - Bouquet Canyon Reservoir, replacement for ill-fated St. Francis Dam & reservoir, begins to fill with water [story]
Bouquet Reservoir

washThe woman who gave birth in the Santa Clara River wash Monday morning and allegedly abandoned the baby has been charged with a misdemeanor, Sheriff’s officials said Thursday.

Nicole Stratton, 30, was cited for misdemeanor child abandonment after being discharged from Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, said Lt. Brenda Cambra of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. The case is expected to be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

She is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 9.

(From a previous story)

The call came in at 5:52 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Whites Canyon Road and Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country.

“We got a call from a transient man in the wash who said a woman had given birth in the wash there. (The informant said) the woman walked off into the wash and left the baby (in the homeless camp with others) after giving birth,” said Detective Thomas Brooks with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “The man called for paramedics and reported that she abandoned the baby.”

Deputies found the woman, who had been living in a homeless camp for a couple days, about an hour later hiding in a tree, Brooks said.

“She’s already been transported to the hospital along with the baby,” said Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Art Marrujo on Monday.

The newborn girl and her mother were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital where both were listed in good condition.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station detectives are investigating the incident.

  1. Only a misdemeanor? That is soo horrible!!!

  2. Such a tragic situation .I can only pray that the child will live to be a success story from all of this .

  3. Is not right if is not for the man who call the baby maybe die she is going to do it again

  4. A misdemeanor????!!!! What kind of screwed up law system is that! She could have went to planned parenthood for free birth control

  5. Christina Rodriguez says:

Seriously. A misdemeanor ? Please don’t tell me that she was given custody of this poor baby after she was discharged from HMH, Have the courts become NUMB to this sort of behavior? ” Two slaps on the wrist little lady, now go back to your wash/ desert residence and behave.” UGH!

  6. Or drop the baby off @ the fire dept, no questions asked. Safely!! But her intention was to leave the baby in the wash!

  7. The life of a wash troll

  8. I hate judging people. But when babies are involved…. mien it gets under my skin. I thought this would’ve have been a felony charge… MISDEMEANOR!!!!! Really? She got off easy, it wouldn’t surprise me if she does it again. She left that poor innocent newborn unattended like it was nothing. And then the LAW SYSTEMS turns arround and treat this situation like nothing happened. ….. this is why these situation gets repeated. …because of our LAW SYSTEM is so screwed up . …

  9. She needs to be spayed. :D

  10. So sad….that she thought leaving baby in the wash was her only option…..people need to have free tubal ligation if they aren’t capable of caring for children that they are going to continually have with no regards to the innocent children they are bringing into this world. 30 is to old not to know better what having a baby means!!

  11. So starts the saga of the Dry River Kid.

  12. I think it might be helpful to think what might have precipitated the pregnancy in the first place.you all are essentially calling her a who’re but what if she was raped? She’s homeless and afraid and who knows what options she had. Before you judge anything based on your priveleged lives, think a little more about what her situation might be.

    • The last story I read is the mother was under the care of a well known doctor that runs a woman’s health center. I was relieved…she needs help especially being in such a desperate situation. Prayers for both the baby and the mom.

  13. And the child got such needed medical attention shortly after being born

  14. That is ridiculous, she left the baby in the care of someone who was on the phone the authorities.

  15. I hope she doesn’t get the baby back. Poor kid

  16. She’s THIRTY YEARS OLD for Christ’s sake!!! No excuses for what she did! period!! Even Pre-teens know how to get to a FREE clinic for help and/or advice!! Regardless of her situation, homeless, raped, strung out – in this day and time with all that is available to less-fortunate people, a 30 year old woman has NO excuses for having a baby in a wash AND abandoning it! It’s pathetic and she deserves way more than she got. If that baby has a chance for a good life, she will never be allowed to see her “mother” again!

  17. Man they’ll give a kid to anybody these days!!! ?

  18. Good chance she went through the pregnancy addicted to drugs I did a Google search under her name and I believe she has been arrested numerous times over the last few years, if in fact this is true the women needs help with her addiction ASAP

  19. Brad Bergman Brad Bergman says:

A misdemeanor what a joke. Throw her ass behind bars and throw away the key.

  20. Misdomeanor? Really….

  21. Too sad, why don’t mothers take the baby to Fire Department or Sheriffs .. poor baby…

  22. Another reason that safe abortions are, and always will be, legal.

    • Joanna Ochoa Joanna Ochoa says:

How is that any different than leaving the baby to die?

    • How is it NOT different? Abortion is, and will always be, a safe alternative to horrific acts like this. Oh, and it’s perfectly legal – and a woman’s choice.

    • Joanna Ochoa Joanna Ochoa says:

      Your still killing the baby

    • Joanna Ochoa Joanna Ochoa says:

Just because it’s legal doesn’t make it right

    • Regardless of personal belief, it’s a woman’s right to choose. Always will be. No need to fight it.

    • Joanna Ochoa Joanna Ochoa says:

At the end of the day the child is still dead. Pre or post birth, Same difference. Just as horrific.

    • Joanna Ochoa Joanna Ochoa says:

A woman’s right is not to decide who lives and who doesn’t. Her right is to decide and prevent pregnancy. Big difference

    • I think we all know by now that the argument for or against the morality of abortion is a ridiculous black hole of repetition. That’s why I’m not debating anyone’s personal beliefs on the subject. I’m only stating that a safe abortion IS legal, and will ALWAYS be legal. It’s a woman’s right to choose – defined.

    • Joanna Ochoa Joanna Ochoa says:

Lol Still no justification to how you claim abortion is a “safer ” alternative. The only reason it’s even legal is because it is less expensive for the government to pay for an abortion than trying to find a child a new home, if not wanted.

    • A legal abortion is ridiculously safer than an illegal one. Kinda simple. And the reason it’s legal is because the majority realize that. It’s ok. You can still rant & rave on Facebook about it (aka the ridiculous black hole of repetition).

    • Joanna Ochoa Joanna Ochoa says:

That would be true if you compared legal vs illegal. But this isn’t the case. She didn’t have an abortion, she gave birth, baby was born. Funny how you are just as much part of the black hole as everyone else.

    • Huh? I’m not comparing anything. I’m only saying abortion is, and always will be, legal. And this case is a perfect example of why it’s important it remains so. Otherwise, awful things like this will be the norm. There’s no argument that counters that. The end.

  23. She is a meth head people and her baby is now addicted to meth! Why would u feel sorry for this low life

  24. This is so ridiculous to charge her with a misdemeanor… I mean please tell me how that’s going to help her or that child…and the story I read in the paper the man who helped deliver the child is the one who called the paramedics and that baby was with him until the paramedics came. So that baby was never left…

    • Amanda Vera Amanda Vera says:

It was left by the mom. She left and ran away to hide. If that man weren’t there she would have done the same thing!

    • Amanda Vera Amanda Vera says:

It was left by the mom. She left and ran away to hide. If that man weren’t there she would have done the same thing!

    • Amanda Vera Amanda Vera says:

It was left by the mom. She left and ran away to hide. If that man weren’t there she would have done the same thing!

    • We don’t know that.

    • Let’s get her tubes tied. End of problem. Babies deserve the best chance at love & life, not to be born under a bridge and left dumped. This women has no business having babies. It’s too bad many women with mental illness, homelessness, and addictions have babies. Ain’t right. God why?

    • Her tubes tied?!?!? Seriously? Is there a clinic in santa clarita that provides these services (womens health, birth control, etc) to people who are homeless and people who are addicted to drugs? I agree that babies deserve all the love and the very best, don’t get me wrong here which is why I ask how being charged is going to help her or the child? Let’s not forget that it also takes TWO people to make a baby…where is the outrage about the father not being there or the call for his vesectomy?? Or what about him being charged for child abandonment?

  25. Jim Lynn says:

What? Is it a misdemeanor or felony to be mentally ill? Have you Santa Clarita police heard of Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey [who signs your paychecks]? Jackie Lacey does not want our citizens to be criminally charged with being mentally ill. Nor does she want law enforcement to brutalize or kill citizens for being mentally ill or black. Santa Clarita police-you need to get informed.

Focus on the baby, protecting the baby. Get this mother the help and mental health help that she needs also.

  26. So sad, she needs HELP

  27. Good. They should have tied her tubes while at the hospital! Please lady don’t have babies.

  28. Dorene Tapp Dorene Tapp says:

I still say there needs to be more publicity about “Safe Surrender”.

  29. Lonnie Bliss Lonnie Bliss says:

How can this be a misdemeanor she should be locked up forever!

  30. At least shes not a ‘river rat’

  31. When someone is living in the wash they obviously have deep problems! She has a disease! She won’t get help until she wants help! She left the baby with someone who called authorities. She didn’t leave the baby in the dirt. How can she do that you say? Most of us will never know because we aren’t in her position. Thank God the baby was with someone who called 911! The woman must have a mental illness! She needs help! I hope the baby is alright and I hope a family who desperately wants a child but can’t have one naturally gets to raise this little miracle!
