Calif. AG Kamala Harris

[Attorney General] – Attorney General Kamala D. Harris announced her support Thursday for SBX2 5, legislation authored by state Sen. Mark Leno to protect children and youth from the harmful effects of electronic cigarettes.  The bill ensures that e-cigarettes are included in existing laws that prevent underage smoking and mandate smoke-free spaces by explicitly defining them as “tobacco products,” in addition to requiring child-resistant packaging.

“Protecting children from a life of nicotine addiction is essential to good public health and smart fiscal policy,” said Attorney General Harris.  “I thank Senator Leno for his leadership on this issue and urge the Legislature to approve this important legislation.”

SBX2 5 will include e-cigarettes in California’s Smoke-Free Act, which prohibits smoking at workplaces, schools, daycares, restaurants, bars, hospitals and on public transportation. The legislation will also make sure e-cigarettes are covered under the 1994 Stop Tobacco Access to Kids Enforcement (STAKE) Act, which has successfully reduced illegal sales of cigarettes to children.  Tobacco use in California is responsible for $13.29 billion in health costs each year.

Attorney General Harris earlier this year launched a first-of-its-kind Bureau of Children’s Justice, with the aim of bringing together the California Department of Justice’s criminal and civil law enforcement tools to hold those who prey on children accountable, help shape and implement policies that help children, and work with a range of stakeholders to better support kids.

How does this help kids? They’re not allowed in bars

  2. When the heck is a kid ever gonna be in a bar?

    • Not true completely. Depends on what you put in them and the drug choices are growing. Yes, no smoke inhaled, but there are harmful chemicals being inhaled and in larger quantiles because everyone, including kids, think it’s “harmless”. More restrictions are needed, but this is a start!

I know how to bring that number way down! Get the millions of tobacco users in the state to switch to a tobacco free life, with vapes!

  4. What about in the mall? Some
    Chick
Blew it right into my 5 year old daughters face not
Paying attention we were right behind her. ?

  5. Harmful effects ? I vape myself, and I understand that it is incredibly lame to do in public , and shouldn’t be blown in the faces of children , but it is virtually innocuous. Breathing the air in los angeles , is no less harmful.

  6. Why would kids even be in a bar? ?

  7. Anyone realize who is promoting vaping and e cigarettes? Believe it or not, it’s the big tobacco companies. Hmmm. Interesting how they are decorating them in kid friendly colors…

    • Sean Cohen Sean Cohen says:

Yeah because adults dont like pink or blue or green. Idiot

    • I get it Sean. I smoked. I loved it! I even know the the torture of trying to quit. It only took 4 words from my sister that would change my life..”Dad has lung cancer”. In 18 months he was gone… Please know that you are Big Tobacco’s main target and as their population dies off, they are constantly trying to find new customers.

    • Actually the only big tobacco companies that are pushing e cigs are the ones that invested in cheap e cig technology (the ones that are sold in gas stations and convenient stores) in reality , the BIG tobacco companies have joined with the federal government in attempts to spread propaganda in order to ban e cigs (with no evidence of any harmful effects) to remain a profitable business.

  8. Casey Bates…. What’s your take???
