cocfootballSanta Clarita Sports Report: September 9, 2015 – There was a full slate of games played last week in the Santa Clarita Valley.

In Santa Clarita prep football action over the weekend, the Hart Indians defeated Downey High School, 38-14. Hart junior quarterback Nick Moore led the way, accounting for four total touchdowns (2 rush, 2 pass) as the Indians opened the season 1-0. Up next for Hart is a road test at Paraclete (Lancaster, CA) Thursday, September 10th at 7 pm. The game is at Antelope Valley College.

Canyon High School fell to 0-2 on the season, dropping a home contest to the Thousand Oaks Lancers, 53-26. The Cowboys look for their first win of the year when they host Eastside High School Friday night, September 11th, at 7 pm.

The West Ranch Wildcats continued their impressive opening to this year’s campaign with a 33-6 victory over Pasadena High School, thanks to a huge performance from senior wide receiver Adam Varga-Thompson. The Wildcats player of the game had eleven catches for 265 yards and three touchdowns. The Wildcats (2-0) travel to Antelope Valley High School Friday night for a non-league game, the game starts at 7 pm.

After getting out to a 14-7 first quarter lead, the Saugus Centurions were shutout in the final three quarters at Newbury Park High School, dropping the game 26-14, evening their record at 1-1. The Centurions host Buena High at 7:30 pm Friday night. The game is being played at College of the Canyons.

The Golden Valley Grizzlies lost a close one in Simi Valley to the Royal High School Highlanders, 31-26. Senior quarterback Victor Corona threw for 358 yards and three scores, adding a rushing touchdown in the loss. The Grizzlies travel to Glendale Thursday night for a non-league game against Crescenta Valley HS. The game will be played at Moyse Stadium at 7pm.

Valencia High School dropped their opener on the road at Palmdale, 32-26. The Vikings look to rebound Friday when they host PAC5 school Chaminade. Kickoff is at 7 pm.

Santa Clarita Christian HS lost at home to South Pasadena in a tightly contested game, 31-28. The Cardinals (1-1) have an open date this week and will travel south to San Diego to face Horizon Christian Academy on September 18th. Kickoff will be at 7 pm.

The Trinity Classical Academy Knights came out of their first ever 11 on 11 football game victorious against Desert Christian Academy Saturday night. The Knights led 42-14 after three quarters and held on to win, 50-44. The Knights play Santa Rosa Academy (Menifee, CA) Saturday, September 12th at 7pm. The game will be held at Temescal Canyon.

The College of the Canyons came up with a historic win Saturday night at Walnut High School, soundly beating the reigning state champion and No. 1 ranked Mt. SAC 30-6. COC played opportunistic defense, generating four turnovers in the win. The Cougars (1-0) square off against Citrus Saturday, September 12th at 6 pm at Cougar Stadium.

The Hart Indians girls’ volleyball team got their first win of the season in dramatic fashion, outlasting the visiting Westlake Warriors in five sets, 3-2. The Indians look to even their record at 2-2 Thursday when they face Burroughs High School on the road at 3:30 pm.

Golden Valley plays at Palmdale on Thursday at 5 pm

The Valencia Vikings beat Dos Pueblos up in Goleta, CA 3-1, and will host Thousand Oaks Thursday at 6pm.

Canyon High takes on Burbank High at home Thursday with a 5:30pm start time.

Saugus High School is off the rest of the week, and will host Centennial on Tuesday, September 15th.

The Wildcats of West Ranch improved to 3-0 after sweeping Notre Dame Tuesday evening. They also won’t play until next Tuesday, when they go on the road to Westlake High School.

The Trinity Girls open their season in the Bessette-Black Memorial Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 12th. The tournament takes place at the Paficic Athletic Center in Claremont, CA.

Santa Clarita Christian travels to Desert Christian in Lancaster this Friday, September 11th for their next match, starting at 5pm.

In Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers won their 8th straight game against the Los Angeles Angels dating back to last season, 6-4. Clayton Kershaw allowed just one earned run over seven innings improving his record to 13-6 on the season.

The Dodgers are on a five game winning streak, and have a commanding 8.5 game lead on the San Francisco Giants for the NL West crown.

The Dodgers send Mat Latos to the mound against Garrett Richards for the final match-up of the season with the Angels at Angels Stadium in Anaheim. First pitch at 7:05 pm.
