Singing, drumming and dancing drew thousands of people to William S. Hart Park for the weekend-long Hart of the West Powwow, an annual event since 1994.
The event gives families a chance to get together while giving spectators an opportunity experience heritage and culture with native dances and hymns.
“This area doesn’t really have many powwows, or native cultural activities here in this area, so they always get a good turnout,” said drummer Benjamin Hale of Phil Hale & Co. “We really enjoy this particular gathering (because) they always treat us really well, always respect our drum, and they’re always very hospitable and take care of us.”
The dances and hymns originate from the Old Warriors Society, according to Hale.
“Our purpose is to make the people feel good and dance,” he siadThis gathering is all about singing and dancing, and at times taking a break and honoring different people – take breaks and talk about the culture.”
