Santa Clarita High School Volleyball
What a match fit for a championship at Hart High School last night. Valencia (10-0) and Hart (8-2) took the court to decide the Foothill League volleyball winner, and fans were treated to a five-set thriller.
The Indians took a 2-0 lead into the 3rd game after winning the first two strongly contested games by a total of five points. Then, the Vikings roared back in a wild game 3 with a 27-25 win, and forced a 5th game after a 25-21 win in game 4.
The deciding 5th set was just as close, which the Vikings squeaked out, 17-15 to complete an undefeated Foothill League record and take the Foothill League title. Only three points in total separated the teams Tuesday night.
Both teams now await CIF-SS playoff seeding.
West Ranch (6-4) swept Golden Valley 3-0 to secure a winning record in league play and finish 3rd in the standings, which should be good enough for a playoff berth.
Divison 5AA No. 1 Santa Clarita Christian also completed a perfect league season, capturing the Heritage League title after finishing 8-0 with a win Tuesday over Faith Baptist, 3-1.
No. 6 Trinity (6-2) remain unblemished by any Heritage League team not named Santa Clarita Christian, finishing the regular season with a 3-0 win over Lancaster Baptist.
Both the Cardinals and Knights also wait to find out where they will be placed in the Division 5AA playoff bracket.
Los Angeles Lakers
In the first meeting of the top two point guards taken in the 2015 NBA Draft, it was Denver Nuggets rookie Emmanuel Mudiay (12 points, 10 assists) who earned first bragging rights over Lakers rookie D’Angelo Russell (7 points, 6 assists), and the Nuggets kept the Lakers winless with a 120-109 win at Staples Center.
Team defense, especially in transition is what plagues the young Lakers (0-4) so far this season, as the Nuggets shot over 50% from the field as a team. Kobe Bryant spoke after the game about sorting out the defensive issues and moving forward as a team.
“You can’t get emotional about it,” Bryant told reporters after the game. “You’ve got to get technical about it.”
Jordan Clarkson led the Lakers in scoring, shooting 12-19 for 30 points.
Los Angeles leaves for a five-game East Coast road trip, and will start in Brooklyn Friday night against the Nets.
