[KHTS] – An earthquake pegged at a magnitude of 3.4 occurred early Thursday morning six miles away from Santa Clarita.
The earthquake occurred at approximately 3 a.m., with an epicenter five miles north northwest of Pacoima, six miles north northeast of Granada Hills and six miles south southeast of Santa Clarita, according to the United States Geological Survey.
Several small aftershocks of less than 1.3 in magnitude occurred following the 3.4 magnitude earthquake.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, although social media was ablaze with reports of the temblor.
The USGS database shows that there is a 96.85 percent chance of a major earthquake, magnitude 5.0 or higher, within 30 miles of the Santa Clarita area within the next 50 years.
The largest earthquake within 30 miles of Santa Clarita was a 6.7 magnitude in 1994.
