The College of the Canyons women’s golf team finished in third place at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) SoCal Regional Championships held Nov. 8-9 at Alisal River Golf Course in Solvang.
Canyons carded a two-day score of 667, trailing only second place Citrus College (648) and the event champions Santa Barbara City College (641) in the seven-team field.
SBCC, Citrus and Canyons also finished 1-2-3, respectively, at the Western State Conference (WSC) Championships, which were also held at Alisal River.
Despite the third place finish, Canyons showed marked improvement on the course. At the WSC Championships held Nov. 1-2 COC posted a two-day score of 689.
The biggest bounce-back performance came from COC sophomore Julia Youn, who shaved 23 strokes off her two-day total at the WSC Championships to place eighth in Southern California.
Youn’s two-day score of 160 (80/80) also earned her a trip to this weekend’s CCCAA State Championships in Morro Bay.
Not far off that pace was COC sophomore Tiffany Whittaker who finished the event with a mark of 163 (82/81) to place 11th in Southern California.
Sophomore Alexis Miller shot a 171 (87/84) while freshman Amanda Horii finished at 173 (90/83).
Whittaker and Youn will both compete as individuals at the CCCAA State Championships being held Nov. 15-16 at Morro Bay Golf Course.
