SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Master’s College volleyball team won’t know until Monday if they made it into the NAIA National Tournament.
However, Saturday’s 3-1 victory over the 12th-ranked Westmont College Warriors will make the waiting game a bit more bearable.
TMC’s win over Westmont caps its regular-season schedule off at 20-10 (11-5 GSAC). Notably, it’s the first time since 2012 that the Lady Mustangs have amassed 20 victories throughout the regular-season.
“Sometimes it’s hard to see the big picture when on the sidelines with all of the energy and emotion, but we did something great tonight,” commented TMC’s head coach Allan Vince. “Our preparation in practice took us to new heights and the team flat out executed all aspects of our game plan. We produced in all positions and came out with a fighting spirit and winning mentality. This match was an awesome way to finish a strong regular-season.”
After falling to Westmont in the first set to the tune of 18-25, TMC took the next two frames with identical scores of 25-21. Despite leading Westmont 23-15 in the waning moments of the fourth set, the Warriors managed to produce a 9-1 run, bringing the match to 24-all. However, a kill from Morgan Koch (Auburn, CA), coupled with a service ace from Aubrey Pyburn (Sun Valley, CA), put the match on ice at 3-1.
In the win, Aubrey Bekendam (Orland, CA) posted 51 kills, Emily Clark (Lake Forrest, CA) tallied 30 digs, while Koch claimed 14 kills. TMC collectively posted 75 digs, 60 kills, 57 assists, and a .210 attack percentage.
Now, the Lady Mustangs wait until Monday to hear if they will advance to the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament.
