1928 - Little dam victim, thought unidentified & buried in SCV, actually ID'd & buried in Chatsworth [story]
Newhall Cowboys

Children and residents who went caroling door-to-door in Santa Clarita last week collected more than 100 pounds of food to help feed local homeless families during the holidays, and collection efforts are continuing.

Participants of “Caroling for Cans” ranged from young children to seniors, who sang Christmas carols door-to-door in an effort to collect canned food for the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry.np_scvfoodpantrylogo

“We (collected) over 100 pounds of food that will feed 20 people for a week,” said Angie da Costa, the event’s organizer, in an email to KHTS. “But we are not done and we need your help.”

Items for the SCV Food Pantry will continue to be collected at Star Dance Center in Newhall, which has longer hours than the Food Pantry itself, according to da Costa.

In addition, Star Dance Center officials are giving out $49 gift cards for new dance students to be used toward tuition at the center in exchange for the donation of one bag of canned goods.

“The shelves at the SCV Food Pantry are very bare, so we are still collecting cans in an effort to (ensure) no child goes to bed hungry in SCV,” da Costa said. “Not only can we help feed our community, but we can also give someone we love the gift of dance.”

The SCV Food Pantry currently has an urgent need for macaroni and cheese, peanut butter (15 oz.), canned meats and canned fruit, as well as non-food items like deodorant, toothbrushes and diapers.

Caroling collection efforts are also set to continue each Wednesday night throughout Santa Clarita. Those interested in joining the group can click here to email da Costa.

Thanks so much for your effort and generosity. Just to clarify though, the Food Pantry shelves are not bare – the center does a great job ensuring we meet the qualified demand of our clients, year-round.

We do have ongoing needs for specific items which we post to our website and we appreciate the ongoing generosity of the community, always. Many thanks to all who help us continue to meet our mission.

    Hi Juile,
When I made a delivery a while back the shelves were lower than I had ever seen. The reason Caroling for Cans decided to donate to the Food Pantry was because of all the articles that were published last year regarding the pantries low supply of food. Early this month a teacher stopped by to make a delivery and told me there wasn’t much there.

However, when I was there yesterday, I realized this wasn’t the case. To me, this means that our wonderful SCV citizens helped the problem. But really, when it comes to kids, is too much ever enough?

I never doubted our pantry’s abilities and I thank each and every person that works there. You are all amazing people. You have provided for many local residences that would have been left hungry without your assistance. But something like this must be a group effort… You guys shouldn’t have to do it on your own.

There are many other organizations as well. I can contact them to check on their supply levels. Maybe we can divide up our collections among all of the wonderful organizations our city has to offer. Because I agree with the quote on the Pantry’s website… “NO CHILD IN THE SANTA CLARITA VALLEY SHOULD GO TO BED HUNGRY!”

For those trying to reach me… You can do so at the following email address: Adacosta77 at me . com.

    Thanks!

    Angie
