Coroners are continuing to investigate a body found in the Rowher Flats Recreational Area Sunday morning after being found Saturday evening during a search for a missing man.

Los Angeles County Department of Coroner officials said they have personnel still on scene working the investigation as of 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

The body was recovered around 12:30 p.m., said Sgt. Cortland Myers with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Search and Rescue Team and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Aero Bureau were able to locate an overturned off-road vehicle in a ravine in Rowher Flats at approximately 4:30 p.m., said Lt. Derek Sabatini with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. A deceased man was found near the vehicle, he continued.

A blue Ford truck was found parked for an extended amount of time in Rowher Flats on Saturday morning, which sparked the search.

Sabatini could not confirm or deny the man found dead was the owner of the truck, adding that the investigation will be handled by the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Jared Yochim, a Santa Clarita Valley resident, posted on Facebook that he saw the man’s truck and became worried.
The following is what Yochim wrote on Facebook, and as of 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, the post had been shared over 550 times.

“Tonight a spot-on offroader noticed this Blue Ford parked at Rowher Flats (Texas Canyon) at 7 p.m. When he drove by again at 11 p.m. he noticed that the truck was still sitting there. Concerned, he posted to an off-road FB page about his concern for whomever the truck belongs to. A few MAJOR easily noticed things stand out that tell you this guy didn’t plan to be gone long.

What we did learn was, this guy doesn’t have anyone that would or could report him missing. He doesn’t have any family that he has regular contact with. Nobody would even know that this guy is missing.

His name is Michael Skelton. He lived in Saugus. If you know Michael or anything about him, speak up. If you know what kind of OHV he had, speak up. Someone knows this guy and someone needs to find him. It’s below 30 degrees and windy as hell out there. Im hoping that someone from the offroad site puts together something to go look for him when the sun comes up.”

Later, Yochim posted, “So far 6 guys including one of his friends are here. Just learning that the truck was here since at least Tuesday night and conditions are miserable here.”

Very sad. How did that guy (the one who posted him missing on FB) KNOW his name though? And he knew so much info about his truck?

    • Jase Yo Jase Yo says:

Jared (my brother) went out there to investigate when he found out on a FB page that the truck was left there for multiple days and the LASD couldn’t be bothered.

Facebook and civilian search teams are the reason this guy was found, not the LASD. The LASD only showed up a day later after social media pressure.

    • Nicole Cruz Nicole Cruz says:

I understand that part, but without knowing who he was, how did he know his name and that he had no family before they even identified the man?

    • Jase Yo Jase Yo says:

Not sure but I think the truck was unlocked from the description. Sure it was something inside the truck.

    • Stacy Brown Stacy Brown says:

I believe from the original posting I read, the truck was unlocked and the person looked at registration info.

    • Nicole Cruz Nicole Cruz says:

That makes more sense. You never know in today’s times if there’s foul play ?

    • So sad that it took civilians to do the work..I hope somebody would do this for me..
Thank you for all the help..I hope somebody can come forward to claim his body.

  2. He looked inside and found the truck registration

  3. Thank god for the guy that found ask his info to help find this man

  4. No 911 for me I’ll hit up fb first

  5. Dan OConnell says:

Bless Jared Yochim for noticing the situation and actually doing something about it. A real role model. Jase Yo, you have a hell of a brother and must have had great parenting growing up!

  6. Mark Yochim says:

Thanks Dan, it’s easy when you have great kids to begin with.
