SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Chayan Lowery (Spring Valley, CA) led all scorers by draining a season-high 21 points Thursday night as The Master’s College women’s basketball team ran past San Diego Christian (5-6, 0-3) with an 80-47 victory in the Lady Mustangs’ GSAC home opener*.
Thursday’s win, TMC’s eighth straight, improved the 16th-ranked Lady Mustangs’ 2015-16 record to 11-2 and 3-0 in conference play. Currently, the Lady Mustangs are enjoying their best start since the 2012-13 campaign.
Complementing Lowery’s double-digit performance was Megan Lindsley (Vancouver, WA) who scored 12 points while Olivia Thompson (Huntington Beach, CA) posted 10 more. Not to be overlooked, TMC’s Bianca Cubello (Riverside, CA) yanked down an evening-high 10 rebounds while chipping in seven assists.
Attesting to an overall team effort displayed by the Lady Mustangs, the visiting Hawks never once tied the game or took the lead. TMC outscored SDCC in all four quarters (23-10, 21-8, 19-18,11-17) and finished the evening by going 14-19 (74%) from the charity stripe, 28-53 (53%) from the field, and 10-24 (42%) from behind the arc. The Lady Mustangs also tallied 20 assists, 19 turnovers, and 9 steals.
“We had some sluggish moments after being off for eight days, but overall, we played hard and adjusted to what SDCC threw at us,” commented eighth-year head coach Dan Waldeck. “I love the way we share the ball and play for the Lord and each other. Our defense and rebounding is continuing to progress, so hopefully we can keep that trajectory moving forward against a tough Biola team on Saturday.”
Looking ahead, TMC will return to Bross Court on Saturday and take on Biola University (9-8, 2-1).
*TMC’s 2015-16 GSAC home-opener was originally scheduled to be on Saturday against Biola, but due to a leak at Grossmont College on Tuesday, the Mustangs hosted the Hawks on Thursday. TMC will travel to SDCC on February 27 for the 2015-16 regular-season finale.
