The No. 18 ranked College of the Canyons women’s basketball team opened Western State Conference (WSC), South play on Wednesday, with the Lady Cougars cruising to a 77-59 victory over Santa Monica College.
Canyons (11-4, 1-0) has now won six straight games and eight of its last nine contests.
On Wednesday, COC jumped out to an early 24-12 first quarter lead, and never looked back, with the Lady Cougars able to maintain control through the duration.
COC sophomore forward Hannah Green posted a triple-double vs. the Corsairs, highlighted by a school record 15 blocks to go along with 15 points and 16 rebounds.
The program’s previous single game record of 12 blocks was set by Zevette Mitchell in 1997.
Earlier this season Green, who currently leads that state in blocks with 5.9 per game, tied Mitchell’s mark with 12 rejections vs. Contra Costa College back on Nov. 27, 2015.
Elsewhere on the court COC sophomore Monica Friedl led the Cougars with 18 points on an 8-of-19 shooting night. She also pulled down seven rebounds and added three assists.
COC freshman guards Erin Kiley and Marina Rojas also helped pace the Canyons attack. Kiley finished with 16 points, two assists and two steals, while Rojas led the team with nine assists and added seven points.
As a team, Canyons shot 41.4 percent from the field, compared to a mark of 25.3 percent by the Corsairs. However, Santa Monica did win the battle of the boards, pulling down 45 rebounds compared to 37 from COC.
Canyons will return to action at 3 p.m. Saturday Jan. 9, as the Lady Cougars travel to face Bakersfield College (1-10, 0-1).
