[Carousel Ranch] – Hundreds of volunteers from the Santa Clarita Valley Church of Christ will volunteer their time, talent and brawn at Carousel Ranch to ensure the nonprofit is ready for predicted storms on Sunday, Jan. 17.
For the past nine years, church parishioners have joined forces on the day before Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday to serve the Santa Clarita Valley by pitching in to accomplish whatever needs doing at Carousel Ranch.
This year is particularly important as El Niño storms could be devastating to the ranch and the children it serves. Some 250 church volunteers will be cleaning, pruning, sandbagging, building and painting. Work begins at 9 a.m. and is expected to continue until noon. Volunteers will then enjoy lunch and a brief church service.
“We expect to put in 750 ‘man hours’ in a single morning,” said Ron Hammer, lead evangelist for the Santa Clarita Church of Christ. “Together we can tackle enormous projects and accomplish what would take a single maintenance worker months to complete.”
The local volunteer event coincides with HOPE worldwide’s National Day of Service, the church’s international charitable organization. Affiliated churches across the country are hosting volunteer service events like this one in their communities. Collectively volunteers have logged more than 200,000 volunteer hours. More information about HOPE worldwide is available at www.hopeww.org.
Serving the community is core to the Santa Clarita Valley Church of Christ’s Christian values and teachings. Its annual Day of Service is just one way the church serves the community. During the holidays, groups of parishioners delivered Thanksgiving meals to struggling families, decorated the homeless shelter and its Christmas trees, and sang Christmas carols at the senior center.
The Santa Clarita Valley Church of Christ meets at 10 a.m. each Sunday at Rancho Pico Junior High School in Stevenson Ranch as well as Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. at the Santa Clarita United Methodist Church on Bouquet Canyon Road. For more information, visit www.scvcoc.com.
