NORTHRIDGE, CA – As the spring season draws closer, the CSUN women’s tennis team enjoyed one final weekend of warm-ups at the Long Beach State Winter Invitational. Facing the host 49ers, the Oregon Ducks and the Denver Pioneers, the Matadors and head coach Gary Victorturned in some notable performances to give them confidence with the 2016 season just a week away at the ITA Kickoff Classic against a nationally ranked program in Cal.
On Friday, Jan. 15, the Matadors lined-up against Denver, a member of The Summit League. In doubles action, juniors Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei posted a 6-2 victory in the top doubles match. As sophomores, the duo earned First Team All-Big West honors following the 2015 season.
In singles action Friday, the Matadors took on the Ducks from the Pac-12 Conference. JuniorVivian Lin posted a three-set victory in the second doubles draw, rallying from a 4-6 loss in the opening set to capture the final two sets 6-4 and 6-1. Scout Shutter also posted a singles victory Friday, posting a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Oregon.
The next day, the Matadors and Ducks squared off in doubles action. Shutter and seniorJessica Warren posted a 6-2 victory over an Oregon tandem in the fourth doubles draw. Singles action saw the Matadors tangle with their Big West Conference rival, the Long Beach State 49ers. Although CSUN did not post a victory on the day, several Matadors, including Lin, Warren, Shutter and Mari Taslagyan all forced a decisive third set.
In Sunday’s finale, CSUN got some revenge against the 49ers in doubles action. Poei and Hsu were victorious once again, recording a 6-4 triumph in the top doubles match. Shutter and Warren also won for the second time on the weekend while Leslie Chang and Elisaveta Nosenko took down an Oregon tandem.
CSUN wrapped up the weekend with singles play against Denver. Sophomore Kiryang Kim(7-5, 6-1), Poei (6-4, 6-1) and Taslagyan (6-1, 6-2) all produced straight-set victories against the Pioneers.
CSUN officially opens the 2016 season on Jan. 22 in Berkeley, CA on the campus of Cal as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Matadors face the host Golden Bears at 10 a.m. and the next day, CSUN will face either the Pac-12’s Washington or Saint Mary’s out of the West Coast Conference. The Matadors’ first home match of 2016 is on Saturday, Jan. 30 against LMU at 11 a.m.
