April 2015 L.A. County site plan showing future sheriff's station at Castaic Junction, southwest of 5/126.

Is a second sheriff’s station in the cards for the Santa Clarita Valley?

It’s a possibility.

The Board of Supervisors voted in February 2012 to open negotiations with Newhall Land for acreage west of Interstate 5 as a new home for the Santa Clarita Superior Courthouse and a new, 45,000-square-foot sheriff’s station.

At the time, according to board documents, the county was looking to move the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station from its present, cramped quarters at Valencia Boulevard and Magic Mountain Parkway to a larger complex on Newhall Land property west of the freeway. The move would be funded at least in part by the sale of the existing station.

Late last year, a possible location of a new 4,760-square-foot Phase I sheriff station, followed by an adjacent 30,000-square-foot Phase II station – plus a 5,200-square-foot service garage, helipad and ancillary structures – was plotted on a map that accompanied the Santa Clara River floodway ordinance revision. The map outlined property identified as a sheriff’s station near Interstate 5, within Newhall Land’s proposed Entrada North development.

Entrada North and Entrada South would be located between Magic Mountain amusement park and I-5. They’re actually the last components of Valencia and are not part of the 21,000-home Newhall Ranch project, which would be adjacent. The draft environmental review documents for Entrada North haven’t yet been published.

Immediately following the supervisors’ 2012 decision, Santa Clarita officials balked, saying a center-city site was more appropriate.

The city continues to pursue its goal of relocating the sheriff’s station to city-owned property on Golden Valley Road that currently houses a temporary fire station, city spokeswoman Gail Morgan said.

“It is centrally located to our population, and we already own the land,” she said. “Over the next year or so, we will work with the county and sheriff’s station to make it happen.”

She said the city intends for the relocated and expanded station to be built and open no later than 2020.

Tony Bell, spokesman for Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, is quick to point out that nothing has been finalized with Newhall Land, and now there are signals of a shift in direction away from moving the sheriff’s station westward to merely adding a satellite.

“The county is working with Newhall Land with the idea that we will have one in the city, and we are looking at an annex in the west,” Bell said.

County attorneys are “in discussions with Newhall Land about the new station,” he said.

Don’t they have one in Canyon Country, in the old library?

  2. Golden Valley!!! More centralized.

  3. this valley is growing so much they probably could use 2 stations

  4. Actually, crime in this valley is growing so fast they need 2 stations!

  5. Trudy Trump Trudy Trump says:

Yes we need two stations especially with the huge development coming in canyon country

  6. You build em, the criminals will fill em. Think towards the future, build big.

  7. Just freckin give them new damn station. Their station is run down and old. They deserve it!

  8. If there’s only one, being in close proximity to the jail is just logical

  9. They need to stay where they are – adding another one on Golden Valley is a good idea – keeps the Magic Mtn Parkway – mall area secure

  10. waterwatcher says:

So if what Tony Bell is saying is true, why did the County just get the flood maps changed on Jan 5th 2016 so that they could fill the flood plain to accommodate the Sheriff’s station? The County Dept. of Public Works did all the work for this station in the Entrada project. It is a really bad location since it is right next to the river. The narrowing of the river could cause downstream flooding, not to mention what might happen to the sheriff station itself in a lengthy heavy rain event. What are they thinking? And what are they not telling the public? The Golden Valley location is much better.

  11. Should be more east not west. Maybe there should be two.

  12. Jose Perez Jose Perez says:

Negative on the extra station. Just increase special units, such as in narcotic and gangs.
Also, more community policing on Paseos and neighborhoods.
They should have more deputies walking around or riding around on bicycles.

  13. Why move it, they are centrally located now.

  14. They need anther station canyon country is out of control u have young kids getting in gangs u have robbery s u have young people getting killed shootings and scv has cobra AND DRUG COPS AND MORE THE BIGGER WE GET THE MORE PROBLEMS

  15. Ann Hustis Ann Hustis says:

    Keep it where it is…..

  16. Travis says:

We need a station in C/C, I mean why put a station in where less crimes are being committed.Every week its C/C or Newhall in the paper. What moron is in charge over there, fire his or her a** and get someone in there that actually wants to clean up these problem areas we have. I’m sure the good people that live in these areas would agree.
