COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Master’s College women’s basketball team improved its 2015-16 record to a conference-leading 19-2 (9-0 GSAC) after taking down No. 8 Vanguard University 58-55 Saturday evening in Costa Mesa.

lowery_TMCWBB16“I couldn’t be more proud of our mental toughness,” commented eighth-year Lady Mustang head coach Dan Waldeck. “We found a way to overcome a tough shooting night, by defending with great discipline. It’s unfortunate that one team had to end the night with a loss, because both teams showed great character. I’m thankful for the win and these ladies.”

After four tightly contested quarters (14-14, 12-16, 20-16, 12-9), the 12th-ranked Lady Mustangs bagged their 16th straight win of the season.

Attesting to Waldeck’s assessment of the “tough-shooting” affair, the Lady Mustangs went 14-15 (93%) from behind the charity stripe, 6-17 (35%) from behind the arc, and 19-55 (34%) from the field.

Leading the way for the Lady Mustangs was Chayan Lowery (Spring Valley, CA) as the sophomore forward posted a team-leading 14 points. Joining Lowery by scoring in double figures was senior guard Nicole Nitake (Torrance, CA) who finished the evening with 12 points.

Defensively, junior forward Bianca Cubello (Riverside, CA) produced a gem by pacing the Lady Mustangs with nine rebounds. Notably, Cubello complemented Lowery’s evening-high five blocks by chipping in three more.

Collectively, the Lady Mustangs yanked down 36 rebounds.

“We’ll need to focus forward as we prepare for a great Westmont team on Tuesday,” further assessed Waldeck.

The Lady Mustangs now look to Tuesday where they face Westmont College, currently the second-best team in the NAIA, on Bross Court. The Warriors are 18-3 and 7-1 in GSAC play, 1.5 games behind the Lady Mustangs.

Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

Around the GSAC:

In addition to No. 12 TMC’s 58-55 victory over No. 8 Vanguard, No. 2 Westmont College took down San Diego Christian 64-37 in San Diego, Menlo College downed Arizona Christian 81-77 in Atherton, while Hope International beat William Jessup 53-45 in Rocklin.
