Marysville, Calif. — The Master’s College shut down the William Jessup offense in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon and continued its dominance of the Warriors in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Mustangs used eight dominant innings from senior Brad Lohse (Chico, CA) to cruise past the Warriors 5-2, while in the second game TMC’s offense exploded for nine runs in a 9-4 victory.
The victories, extending the club’s winning streak to four games, pushed the Mustangs’ overall record to 13-6 and 6-3 in the GSAC where they stand one game behind first-place Westmont.
Lohse allowed one run in eight innings on the afternoon, struck out five and walked no one en route to his third victory (3-2) of the season.
“He located his fastball really well and got ahead of a lot of hitters,” said sophomore catcher David Sheaffer (Mt. Airy, NC).
The Mustangs got on the board early and often as they scored runs in each of the first three innings. Sheaffer led the way with one hit in four at-bats along with two rbi in the game.
In the nightcap, the TMC offense collected 13 hits in a well-balanced attack. Five Mustangs had multiple hits in the victory.
“This was the best we’ve looked at the plate all season,” said Sheaffer. “One through nine we had a lot of execution and clutch hitting.”
Freshman leftfielder Aaron Shackelford (Murrieta, CA) capped a five-run fourth inning with a two-run homer to extend the Mustang lead to 8-1. Shackelford finished the game 2-3 with two runs scored and three rbi.
“It was a great road trip for our team,” said head coach Monte Brooks. “Enthusiasm was at an all-time high, we pitched effectively, had timely hitting, and played solid defense.”
The Mustangs will bring their four-game winning streak into the Tucson Invitational next weekend in Arizona. They’ll play twice on Saturday, facing Missouri Valley at 9:00am and then Malone (OH) at 12:30.
