Tip of the Week: Preventing Vehicle Thefts
‘Smash and grabs’ are a common problem all over the country.Thieves look into your vehicle for anything of interest, smash the window, then grab what they can and run. This can be a very expensive inconvenience to the victim. Here are some tips to prevent yourself from becoming a victim:
Never leave purses, laptop computers, cell phones, GPS devices, etc. in your vehicle where they are in plain view. If you cannot take them with you, then store them in the trunk and out of view.
Never leave items of interest, like gym bags, backpacks, unmarked boxes, or packages in your vehicle in plain view. Even though a thief does not know what these items contain, it may be worth the risk to them to steal them.
When parking at night, try to park in a well-lit area to deter thieves.
Consider using a sunscreen in your vehicle, even at night or in parking structures. This makes it far more difficult for a thief to look into your vehicle for anything of interest.
