LASD Update: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a man that occurred on Friday, March 11, 2016.

Homicide detectives have learned that on Friday, March 11, 2016, at approximately 9:10 p.m., Santa Clarita Station deputies responded to an apartment at the 26000 block of Isabella Parkway, Canyon Country. The informant in the call stated that he just shot a male who broke into his apartment while he was home.

Once deputies arrived on scene, they discovered the suspect, a male Hispanic adult, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to the informant and witnesses, the suspect was trying to get into the informant’s apartment. The informant told the suspect several times to leave and that he did not live there, but the suspect ignored him. When the suspect broke out a window and started to climb inside the apartment, he was shot by the resident.

The resident is being detained at the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station pending additional investigation.

The resident’s handgun was recovered at the location.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call “Crime Stoppers” by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.

Original story:

A Canyon Country resident reportedly fatally shot a man who was pounding on doors and broke a window at an apartment complex Friday night.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a burglary call on the 26000 block of Isabella Parkway and found that the man had been shot, according to Sgt. Andrew Dahring of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Deputies received calls around 9:10 p.m. about a Hispanic man who was reportedly pounding on doors in the area. When deputies arrived they found that the man had allegedly been shot by a resident whose window he broke, according to Shirley Miller, public information officer for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The man was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and was pronounced dead, said Miller.

“Homicide detectives are investigating the incident to try to put together the details as far as what happened,” said Miller.

  9. If he felt his life and his families life was threatened then it will be justified.

  10. Glad I don’t live there anymore

  11. Steven Craig Steven Craig says:

He wasn’t inside his residence. You can’t shoot someone though a window even if he broke it. I feel for his situation. I would want to also. Problem with California law is he has to be inside. It’s going to be a long night for this homeowner. He may be charged

    • Unless your life us at risk, or in danger, he does not have to be in the home necessarily

      • macroview says:

If you do this you will need to persuade a jury that your life or the lives of innocents was in imminent danger and he was a deadly and imminent threat. If he was armed and coming in that window, then you’ve got a case. Otherwise you just killed a vandal and tresspasser, and that does not meet the threshold of lethal response– certainly not in anti-2nd Amendment California.

    • Yes he does. Enless there is a credible threat to your life (has a gun pointed at you) they have to be inside the residence.

    • Mike Weaver Mike Weaver says:

He won’t get charged he weapon was registered legally and he declared self defense. And no they do not have to be inside the residence.

My mom said she look outside saw yellow tape wrap around her tree going to the sidewalk and up the sidehill outside her door.

  13. It’s Isabella pkwy apartments i heard gun shots

  14. To bad for the guy trying to protect his family if the guy he shot was black or brown
he is in for a lot of legal problems
if he was white he might just get away with it
White lives don’t matter they don’t even make it to the news i’m sorry to say
    Sad state of affairs
The people that hate America will just use it
They would rather have the cops show up and make little chalk marks all over that guys house where his family lay dead

  15. Anthony Corral! Nice.

  16. Jill, Just as I mentioned a couple of days ago. I’m glad it’s not on my side of town, but it still saddens me that it’s happening at all.

Well at least he killed him, there’s no OTHER side of the story.

  19. Just like a mama bear and her Cubs she will be protected no matter what!

  20. Shirley Lysse says:

I am sure he feared for his life, these days you just don’t know, too many bad elements out here. I would have done the same to protect my family.

  21. These source of news are so misleading. One says BROKE IN and another broke my window? If you broke my window id kick ur ass because i dont want to pay to fix lol but if you broke in you know whats coming

  22. I can’t believe the discrediting of life in these comments. You people should be ashamed. Or are you all that cold and calloused to this stuff already? Maybe it was Obama’s fault? Ridiculous man, someone is dead for a very very small thing. The homeowner reacted way too rapidly and should be charged, you can’t just kill anyone because you are scared, there are rules of engagement. As of right now, the victim had no weapon, so he was murdered. And remember, this victim has a family too, try tobealittle considerate to those effected but not involved. This is why people can’t just own guns willy nilly and need pepper education around them, or else people get all amped on adrenaline and kill anything that moves. I’m interested to see how this plays out.

    • That wasn’t a victim that was a perpetrator and would you rather he have gotten inside and killed one of the children are worse molested them and scarred their lives for years to come he broke the window trying to get in he started the violence I guess it’s better if actually got inside would’ve been much better if you cause more damage

  23. Lisa Stowell McGee this is in your area!

  24. If this was in an apartment complex how was the shooter a homeowner?

  25. Anonymous says:

Jazzie Espinoza in your apartments? ?

  26. Ralph Green Ralph Green says:

I can’t help but not feel sympathy for the victim. If you go around banging on peoples doors you can expect some form of confrontation. Doing something like that is sketchy and breaking window would make me fear for my life. Someone is forcing entry with no clear intent and I wouldn’t be surprised if an entire clip gets used on him. That is a scary situation to be in and I personally feel the homeowner did the right thing

  27. Todd Wimett Todd Wimett says:

I choose to protect my valuable, loving family rather than being concerned about some irrational person that could quite possibly take their lives.

  28. macroview says:

If you do this you will need to persuade a jury that your life or the lives of innocents was in imminent danger and he was a deadly and imminent threat. If he was armed and coming in that window, then you’ve got a case. Otherwise you just killed a vandal and tresspasser, and that does not meet the threshold of lethal response– certainly not in anti-2nd Amendment California.

  29. Gem says:

The guy was shot in front of a apartment complex so obviously the homeowner chased him down to shoot him. Saw the scene, the houses are up the hill from where the body was. A Friend lives in complex said heard more then one shot.

  30. Joe Powell Joe Powell says:

I’m a gun rights person, stuck in a state that protects the criminal more than the law abiding citizens, sad to say California law states that if a person is Not inside your home, You cannot defend yourself. He must make entry for you to be threatened, my thought is Bust A Cap in Dat Azz,

  31. Joe Powell Joe Powell says:

I’d rather be judged by 12, than Carried by 6

    • macroview says:

I understand that oft-quoted sentiment, but it has landed too many people in jail, especially in anti-2nd Amendment Kalifornia.

The threshold for using deadly force is that you reasonably feared for your life, the attacker had the means to kill you or other innocents, and was an imminent threat. If you cannot prove to a jury that he was armed with a deadly weapon, that he was inside your home already (where you were), that he was not running away or moving in a direction other than yours (i.e. no longer posing a deadly threat), and you had no other option than to use deadly force to stop a deadly threat, you may go to jail for murder or manslaughter. There is also no stand-your-ground law, or “Castle Doctrine” here (certainly not in SoCal or the Bay area.)

  32. Javi says:

Yup. You break into a persons home and you get shot. This should run front page in a free special delivery so that the CRIMINALS operating in the Santa Clarita Valley understand the consequences is their behavior. The 2nd Amendment is made FOR INDIVIDUALS to be able to protect their FAMILIES from criminals as well as from am out of control government. I hope the homeowners is seen as justified and if he is not I hope he gets help in defending himself legally. Good job protecting your family!

  33. Jeff Jeffrey Matlen Hillary Brooks

  34. Adam Beltran Adam Beltran says:

If those are indeed the facts than it sounds like a just shooting to me

  35. John Chan John Chan says:

As long as these criteria are met , his use of deadly force should be justified .

1.Reasonably believed that you were in imminent danger of being killed, injured, or touched unlawfully,
    2. Reasonably believed that you needed to use force to prevent that from happening, and
    3. Used no more force than was necessary to prevent that from happening.

  36. Cory Austin Cory Austin says:

If he entered the window that he broke He got what he deserved. I would have done the same thing without a thought

  37. John Chan John Chan says:

Unless we have access to the police report we can only go by what media is saying and regardless if he was unarmed or not , if he did make entry and continued to be a threat to the resident your allowed to use enough force to stop the threat . If he was still outside and just broke the window then we have a different story .

  38. Gee Hawd Gee Hawd says:

He did ALL a favor and possibly helped him actually doing any damage. You come banging like some freak you bet ur ass im protecting my fam and fellow neighbor.

  39. Tennis Lee Tennis Lee says:

    Is not gonna be justify.

  40. Ralph Green Ralph Green says:

    I’d do the same thing

  41. I’m sure there is a lot more to this story than what we are reading. Sounds shady.

  42. What a coward. Essentially he was ding dong ditching and a window got broken. The guy was scared but essentially safe, people that can’t keep their cool should only own a taser or at least shoot him in the leg. Now 2 lives are ruined- murder2

  43. What’s this got to do with Santa Clarita putting up additional sensors at intersections? Now that’s something important our politicians have to deal with. Crime…so what.
    Sarcasm of course.

  44. John Gilbert John Gilbert says:

“Better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.”

  45. Dan O says:

If you try to break into someone’s home while they are inside, you’d better be prepared to deal with the consequences. A very stupid move on the part of the guy who was killed. I’m curious as to the relationship between the two parties.

  46. Everyday thing in Santa Clarita (canyon country)

  47. Pat Hamblin says:

What law are you referring to that he has to be inside his residence? The threshold is if he believed that his life or his families was in jeopardy of great bodily injury or death.

  48. Pat Hamblin says:

Also, I have NEVER heard of anyone’s window being broken while people are ding-dong ditching.

  49. Since he told him to leave and he didn’t. I now wonder if the person deceased had a developmental disability or suffered from mental illness or was simply drunk and lost.

  50. Q lamentable hecho por q el no era delincuente era una persona tranquila yo q lo conozco me da mucha pena este suceso el error de el fue equivocarse de departamento…q tristeza

  51. jose says:

If any one of you were there then you could say with certainty what unfolded. For those calling the shooter a murderer, think for a moment you are in your house and someone is trying to get through the front door. After no success, they break your window and start making their way in. Unless there’s a fire in your house and he’s trying to help you get out, what else would he be doing. You can say you would talk to him and ask him calmly what he wants. Your heart would be beating so fast you mind would be trying to come up with the right decision in 1 or maybe 2 seconds. Fight or flight kicks in and you shoot because you have no where to “fly” to especially if you have kids in the house or any other family members. You would want to protect them. Yes it’s very unfortunate for the person who was shot, but he/she should have thought what he/she was doing or not have taken that drug or drank that drink. Either way it’s not the fault of the homeowner for what the dead man did or didn’t do to prevent this incident.
