CSUN women’s tennis junior Mickey Hsu was named the Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. In Matador victories over Connecticut and Cal Poly, Hsu held an unblemished record in both singles and doubles play, while competing in both at the No. 1 draw, to earn her second weekly award from the league coaches in 2016.
“We are proud of Mickey for how she approaches practice each and every day,” CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. “She is a great example for her teammates and her play was awesome last week.”
Last week, Hsu went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles play as she and the Matadors toppled Connecticut (5-2) and Cal Poly (6-1). In doubles play with fellow junior Kristen Poei, the tandem captured a 6-3 victory over UConn and took a 6-4 decision over the Mustangs as CSUN returned to Big West action. The duo has won three of its last four matches and is 6-7 overall on the season.
In singles play, Hsu scored a pair of No. 1 draw victories for the Matadors. She earned a big point to give CSUN a 3-2 advantage at the time with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Connecticut. Three days later, she won in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-3, against Cal Poly and has now won of her past six singles matches.
For the season, Hsu is 8-6 overall in singles and has won four of her past six matches. As a team, CSUN has won four its last six matches and three of its past four.
This is the second weekly award in 2016 for Hsu, who also received the award after helping lift CSUN to a 4-3 victory over LMU on Jan. 30. She earned First Team All-Big West honors in both singles and doubles in the 2015 season.
Hsu, Victor and the Matadors return to action this weekend with a match at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Mar. 26. First serve from Orange County is slated for 11 a.m.
