NORTHRIDGE, CA —The CSUN softball team (21-16, 1-2 Big West) lost 2-0 to Long Beach State Sunday afternoon in the third and final game of a Big West Conference series at Matador Diamond.
Junior Rebecca Bell kept the 49ers off the scoreboard for the first six innings, but a lack of offense at the plate and a pair of runs for Long Beach State in the seventh gave the visitors the rubber match and series victory.
For the second-straight day, the Matadors and 49ers engaged in a pitchers’ duel in which both teams’ starters shined in the circle. Bell (3-4) did not allow a run over the first six innings, working out of a few jams and finishing with three strikeouts and three walks. She allowed only three hits over the first six innings and her defense provided her with a pair of double plays.
Her counterpart, Christina Clermont, was even better. She allowed only two hits in a complete-game shutout and finished with seven strikeouts and one walk.
In the seventh, the Long Beach State scratched together two runs to claim the series. The lead-off batter singled and the next doubled to chase Bell from the circle.
With runners on second and third and no outs, Daphne Pofek came in to pitch for CSUN. She got a line-out on the infield to get the first out of the frame but the next batter snuck a single past a drawn-in infield and two runs scored.
CSUN could not muster a rally in the seventh, going in order to end the game. The Matadors’ best chance came in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Savannah Horvath cranked her first triple of the season. However, she was tagged out at the plate on a fielder’s choice for the second out of the inning.
Taylor Glover raised her hitting streak to seven-straight games and recorded her 13th stolen base of the season. Karlie Habitz threw out her sixth runner trying to steal a base and Haileigh Gonzalez drew CSUN’s only free pass.
The Matadors are off to Honolulu to face the University of Hawai’i in a three-game Big West Conference series. The two teams will play a single game on Friday, April 8 and then a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9.
