Humphrey Mahowa
Humphrey Mahowa scored two goals and three teammates added one apiece to lead The Master’s University to a 5-1 shellacking of La Sierra Friday afternoon on Reese Field.
The non-conference triumph was the Mustangs’ fourth of the season, moving the club to 4-2-1.
Mahowa’s initial goal of the match, his fourth of the year at the 6:15 mark of the opening half off a Luis Garcia-Sosa assist, gave the Mustangs a 2-0 edge. His team-high fifth goal came in the 62nd minute (61:02) of play, extending the TMU advantage to 4-1. Trevor Mangan assisted on Mahowa’s 30th career goal.
While the junior All-American got most of the attention on a sun-baked afternoon, two of his freshmen teammates scored first and last in the victory. Local product Justin Ikeora (Valencia HS) ignited the Mustang attack with his second goal of the year just 2:12 into the match. Garcia-Sosa, the club’s assist leader with five, and Taylor Howard (corner kick) contributed on Ikeora’s shot.
With the clock winding down under 10 minutes, freshman Nick Thayer tacked on the match’s final tally, scoring his first collegiate goal in the 83rd minute (82:54) in unassisted fashion.
Following the match, head coach Jim Rickard voiced his enthusiasm for Thayer, saying, “(It was) nice to have Nick Thayer get the first goal of his career.”
Not to be overlooked in the club’s five-goal effort was another score from Elijah Paniagua. The senior, who booted in the team’s lone goal in Wednesday’s 1-1 tie at Marymount, gave the Mustangs a 3-1 lead at the 19:13 mark of the opening stanza with Matt Logan assisting.
Mustang keeper Kyle Cunningham notched his first win (1-0-1) of the season with a three-save effort, allowing the Golden Eagles’ lone goal at the 22:04 mark of the first half.
Following an energy-sapping, early schedule that has featured seven matches in 15 days, the Mustangs head into a much-needed week off before closing out the non-conference portion of their schedule next Friday when they host Bethesda at 4:30pm on Reese Field.
Rickard looked back on the victory and ahead to the week off, saying, “It was nice to get multiple goal scorers and a comfortable win. La Sierra moved the ball very well today but we capitalized on our chances. We’re relieved to have a week before our next game to recover from a packed schedule.”
