The College of the Canyons men’s soccer team won its second game of the week on Sunday, as the Cougars claimed a 2-1 victory over Cosumnes River College at Cougar Stadium.
Canyons (2-4) has now won two of its last three matches, including a victory over Chaffey College on Tuesday. During that span COC also suffered a 3-1 home loss to No. 4 state ranked Hartnell College on Friday, in which the Cougars were tied 0-0 at halftime.
On Saturday, Canyons got things started with a goal by freshman Josue Cartagena in the 20th minute. That goal, Cartegena’s first of the season, came by way of an assist from forward Jose Ruiz.
In the 39th minute it was Ruiz who found the back of the net on a long kick from the right side which sailed over the Cosumnes goalkeeper to give Canyons a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The goal was also the first of the season for Ruiz.
Canyons was able to hold onto that early advantage until the Hawks got on the board in the 76th minute to make things interesting down the stretch.
The Cougars outshot Cosumnes 15-12 in the game. COC goalkeeper Cristian Arriaga (2-4-0) recorded four saves on the day and was credited with the win.
Canyons will next host West Hills Lemoore College at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23. That game will be played at The Master’s College.
