A Granfondo bike race for all ages is coming to Santa Clarita this month.
Granfondo, meaning long distance or great endurance, had its origin in Italy and over several decades the idea has swept through Europe and North America.
Granfondo bike races are known for offering beautiful scenery and challenging courses, alongside thousands of riders from a wide range of ages. Now the concept of the Granfondo is coming to Santa Clarita. On Saturday, October 22, 2016, riders of all levels are invited to participate in Gran Fondo Santa Clarita.
This event will have its expo, start and finish in the heart of the City of Santa Clarita at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex, located at 20870 Centre Pointe Parkway. Gran Fondo is sponsored by the Santa Clarita Velo Bicycle Club and Road Bike Action Magazine, and a portion of the event’s proceeds benefit the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson’s disease.
There are three routes for riders to choose from, varying from 20 miles to 100. Each course offers color-coded signage, on-course support and six stops with fuel and hydration. Following the race, participants will enjoy prizes and raffle drawings, chilled brews from Wolf Creek Brewery and lunch from Stone Fire Grill, as well as live music. For younger riders, a grassy kids’ course will be set up at the expo all day. At 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21, participants can enjoy interviews with a panel of professional riders at the Sports Complex.
Registration stations will be open on Friday, October 21 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 22, at 5:30 a.m.
Pre-registration is advised. For information regarding registration, virtual timing and more, please visit GranFondoSantaClarita.com/info/ or the Gran Fondo Facebook page, Facebook.com/granfondosantaclarita.
