County planners have set a date for the final hearing on Chiquita Canyon landfill officials’ application to increase operations in Castaic.

The hearing is planned to be on March 1 at 6 p.m. at West Ranch High School.

The hearing represents the culmination of years of discussion and debate regarding the Waste Connections’ request to pick up the pace of their waste collection operations, as well as reconfigure the property, allowing the landfill to maximize its space, according to Chiquita representatives.

“It’s the next step in a very lengthy public review process,” said John Musella, spokesman for Chiquita Canyon landfill. “We always anticipated the meeting here in Santa Clarita — it’s always been the county’s intention to have one, and so we’re looking forward to March 1.”

The landfill’s proposal has been opposed by a group of residents who live near the landfill, Citizens for Chiquita Canyon Landfill Compliance and SCOPE, a Santa Clarita-based environmental group.

One of their issues was access for the Val Verde population, which is, on average a lower-income community near the landfill, which also has a high population of Spanish speaking residents, a concern reiterated Thursday, when C4CCLC member Jeremiah Dockray was reached for comment.

At the Val Verde Civic Association meeting Thursday night Rosalyn Wayman, our 5th district field deputy, reported the location has not been decided yet. May want to double check this.

  2. waterwatcher says:

Oh heavens – why would you use a KHTS story? They are so pro landfill, they can’t even show a picture of what a dump really looks like. It is certainly NOT a pretty picture of green hills and green waste since they don’t even have a green waste facility.
And though this may be the last hearing in the SCV, it will not be the last hearing. This proposal will go to the Board of Supervisors.
KHTS has been receiving all kinds of ad business from Chiquita Canyon Landfill. Unfortunately that seems to be influencing reporting.

That’s just one of our stock Chiquita photos. You’re welcome to send us others for our consideration…. and to submit an op-ed :)

  3. C.R. says:

This is not an increase in operations. The existing CUP has reached its agreed upon limit requiring that it be shut down.
This is a brand new CUP being proposed.
