Brendan Rodgers blasted a grand slam and Sam Hilliard went deep twice, but the JetHawks blew a pair of leads and fell to the Modesto Nuts, 15-13, on Tuesday night at The Hangar.
The grand slam for Rodgers put the JetHawks in front 13-10 in the bottom of the seventh, but Modesto scored one in the eighth and four in the ninth to capture the victory. Rodgers finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs scored.
Lancaster at one point led 6-0. They scored three in the first, two coming on Sam Hilliard’s first home run of the night. Roberto Ramos also drove in a run with an RBI double. Hilliard led off the home half of the third with his second blast. He is now tied with Brian Mundell with six home runs to lead the club.
Wes Rogers hit a solo homer of his own in the fourth for the JetHawks and Brendan Rodgers delivered an RBI double.
Modesto got right back into the game with a five-run fourth inning. They followed it up with a four-run sixth to take a 9-6 lead. The JetHawks immediately tied it with three in the bottom of the frame. Brian Mundell, Yonathan Daza, and Roberto Ramos drove in the runs.
The Nuts went back in front on Ricky Eusebio’s solo homer with two out in the top of the seventh. He finished 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBIs, and four runs scored out of the leadoff spot in the order.
Despite allowing the grand slam to Rodgers, Matt Walker (2-0) picked up the win for Modesto (20-12). Salvador Justo (2-4) blew the save in the ninth inning for the JetHawks (14-18) and suffered the loss. Spencer Hermann earned the save with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
The three-game series continues on Wednesday night at The Hangar. Peter Lambert (0-3) will start for Lancaster against Reggie McClain (4-1). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
