The Placerita Canyon Nature Center is holding “The Rattlesnakes of North America,” where attendees can get up and personal with these notorious creatures.
Ranger Frank Hoffman will be guiding attendees, speaking about the various types of rattlesnakes, debunking myths and urban legends, and educating about what to do if a rattlesnake bites you. Hoffman has had over 23 years of experience now in handling rattlesnakes throughout the County’s Department of Parks and Recreation all throughout the Antelope Valley to the Simi, San Gabriel and Fernando Valleys.
Calling the Placerita Canyon Nature Center home now, Hoffman is glad to be the Recreation Services Supervisor and deals weekly with these incredible animals.
This event will be partnered with County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation and The Community Hiking Club all in effort to put on the May Community Nature Education Series.
California is the home to 10 subspecies of rattlesnakes. Learn what makes them unique as we debunk myths and urban legends. Learn what to do when a rattlesnake encounter occurs and what not to do in the event of a bite to you or your animals. There are between 7,000-8,000 people bitten annually in the United States by venomous snakes; of those, approximately five are fatal. The Center will have three different subspecies of the California rattlesnakes on exhibit and will have local statistics relative to human and animal envenomation as well.
