The California League announced Tuesday that Lancaster JetHawks shortstop Brendan Rodgers has been named the California League Player of the Week for the week of May 22-28.
Rodgers, 20, hit .500 (15-for-30) with three doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored during the week. He led the JetHawks to a 4-3 record and helped the club gain sole possession of first place in the South Division for the first time this season after Sunday’s victory.
The Rockies top-ranked prospect according to Baseball America and MiLB.com, Rodgers is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak, the last six of which have been multi-hit efforts. He had a season-best 13-game hitting streak earlier in May and leads the league with a .405 (45-for-111) batting average and a 1.162 OPS for the month. Of his 45 hits during May, 20 have been for extra bases including 11 doubles and seven home runs. He’s totaled 28 RBI in 26 May games.
For the season, Rodgers is hitting .390 with a 1.090 OPS in 32 games. The third overall pick in the 2015 draft leads the California League in both categories.
This is the second Player of the Week award for Rodgers, who also won for the week of May 8-14, and the fourth-straight week that a JetHawk has been named Player of the Week. Outfielder Sam Hilliard earned the honor for the week of May 1-7 and outfielder Wes Rogers was the league’s weekly award-winner last week (May 15-21).
The four consecutive Player of the Week awards ties the JetHawks franchise record set in 2007 when Brad Correll (Aug. 6-12), Mark Wagner (Aug. 13-19), Zachary Daeges (Aug. 20-26) and Steve Garrabrants (Aug. 27-Sept. 3) were named Cal League Player of the Week in consecutive weeks. Lancaster was affiliated with the Boston Red Sox in 2007.
Rodgers is the first JetHawk to win multiple Player of the Week awards in one season since first baseman A.J. Reed was named Player of the Week four times in 2015.
