June is National Pet Preparedness Month! The city of Santa Clarita’s Emergency Management crew reminds residents not to forget your beloved pets when you’re putting together your family’s emergency kit.
When preparing for hazards such as wildfires, wind storms, earthquakes, power outages, transportation incidents and other occurrences, make sure your pets are a part of the family plan.
Have a predetermined plan to evacuate, transport and shelter your pets as well as your family members.
Here’s a list of quick top 10 emergency supplies for your family pet:
- Food (your pet’s regular food)
- Water
- Leash and collar
- Bowl(s)
- Photo of your pet/ID and a photo of you with your pet
- Medications your pet needs
- Immunization/vet records (keep both updated)
- Pet carrier
- First Aid Kit
- Plastic bags for sanitation
Your pet needs to beat the summer heat, too! Summer tips:
- Be sure your pet(s) has access to plenty of water, especially when it’s hot.
- Keep your pet out of direct heat.
- Avoid excessive exercise in hot, humid weather.
- Never leave your pet(s) in the car! Temperatures can rise quickly even with the windows rolled down.
- Be mindful of hot pavement that can burn paw pads.
