STOCKTON, Calif. – Roberto Ramos knocked three hits, but the Lancaster JetHawks struck out a season-high 16 times in a 9-3 loss to the Stockton Ports on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
Stockton starter A.J. Puk (4-4) struck out a career-high 12 batters over 6.2 innings. Reliever Armando Ruiz struck out four over the final 2.1 innings.
The Ports (29-27) jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the third inning. They scored single runs against starter Trey Killian (5-2) in the first and second innings, then put up three unearned runs in the third.
With two outs and a runner on base, Mikey White lofted a fly ball to deep right field. Sam Hilliard got to it on the warning track but the ball glanced off his glove and fell to the ground. A run scored, and then next two batters picked up RBI-hits. All three runs in the inning were unearned.
Lancaster (30-26) got on the board against Puk in the fourth inning. Wilson Soriano doubled and scored on a Ramos base-hit. Ramos finished 3-for-4 with the RBI marking his second straight three-hit game. He had gone 3-for-4 with two doubles and the game-winning home run on Friday.
The Ports broke the game open and ended Killian’s night in the fifth inning. They sent nine batters to the plate and picked up four runs on four hits. Max Schuh entered the game in relief with the bases loaded and no outs and allowed all three inherited runners to score. Each run in the frame was charged to Killian who allowed nine runs (six earned) on 11 hits over 4.0 innings on the night.
The JetHawks added their final two runs in the seventh inning. Mylz Jones doubled home a run and later scored on a Scott Burcham single.
