The Lancaster JetHawks hit three home runs and took a 7-5 lead to the ninth, but the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes rallied for an 8-7 victory to open the season’s second half on Thursday night at The Hangar.
Rancho Cucamonga loaded the bases with nobody out on three singles against J.D. Hammer (0-1), who was making his High-A debut. Will Smith was hit by a pitch to force home a run.
Ibandel Isabel followed with a grounder to the right side that brought in a pair. Hammer pounced off the mound to field it and dove to first to record the out. He then fired to the plate, but Omar Estevez came all the way around from second base and slid under the tag of Chris Rabago to give the Quakes the lead for good.
JetHawks pitcher Trey Killian
The Quakes took the lead with an unearned run in the opening inning against JetHawks starter Trey Killian. The right-hander loaded the bases with nobody out and was able to limit the damage. The JetHawks took their first lead in the second on a two-run homer by Wes Rogers.
Rancho Cucamonga tied it when D.J. Peters went deep to lead off the third. The JetHawks took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the frame on Sam Hilliard’s RBI single. The Quakes hit a pair of home runs in the fourth. Yusniel Diaz launched a solo shot and Omar Estevez hit a two-run blast.
Lancaster tied the game on back-to-back solo homers by Mylz Jones and Chris Rabago in the bottom of the fourth inning. It was the first of the season for Rabago.
Killian struck out seven and allowed four earned runs in five innings. Carlos Polanco followed with two perfect frames out of the Lancaster bullpen.
Tony Gonsolin (3-3) tossed two perfect innings of his own for Rancho Cucamonga to pick up the win. He struck out five, including all three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth to close out the game.
The four-game series continues on Friday night at The Hangar. Right-hander Jesus Tinoco (5-1) will start for Lancaster against left-hander Devin Smeltzer (1-1). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
