RANCHO CUCAMONGA – The Lancaster JetHawks surrendered a season-high five home runs and fell to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 12-2 Sunday afternoon at LoanMart Field.
The 10-run loss matched the largest of the season for the JetHawks (4-7, 42-39).
DJ Peters and Johan Mieses combined for all five Rancho Cucamonga (7-4, 43-38) home runs. They began the scoring with back-to-back home runs against starter Trey Killian (6-4) in the second inning. It marked the fourth time the Quakes have hit back-to-back home runs against Lancaster this season.
The JetHawks managed to score a run against rehabbing left-hander Scott Kazmir in the third. Robbie Perkins led off with a walk, moved to second base on a Wes Rogers hit, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
Rancho Cucamonga pulled away against Killian in the fifth inning. Luke Raley whacked a two-run double before coming home on Peters’ second homer of the afternoon.
Killian allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits over six innings. He has surrendered eight home runs over his last three starts.
Cristian Quintin entered from the JetHawks bullpen and gave up a solo home run to Peters in the seventh inning. The three-run game is the first against Lancaster since Rancho Cucamonga’s Kyle Garlick hit three homers at The Hangar on April 18, 2016.
Peters came to the plate with a chance for a fourth home run in the eighth inning, but Quintin walked him on four pitches. That loaded the bases for Mieses who promptly lined one over the left field wall for a grand slam.
Yonathan Daza went hitless in the game to snap his hitting streak at eight games.
Here’s the box score.
The JetHawks can win the series with a victory in the finale tonight at LoanMart Field. Jesus Tinoco (6-1) will start against Yadier Alvarez (2-4). First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
Note: The July 4 Independence Day Celebration game against the Lake Elsinore Storm and post-game fireworks show presented by Anheuser Busch is sold out.
