The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station posted the following update on their Facebook Page Wednesday:
Public Safety is our #1 priority. We received many requests from the public to conduct another pedestrian safety operation like the one that we did in March 2017. And on Wednesday, that’s exactly what we did.
The morning operation, conducted jointly by SCV Sheriff’s Traffic and Crime Prevention Unit deputies, took place at the intersections of Bouquet Canyon Road/Seco Canyon Road and Valencia Boulevard/ McBean Parkway.
During the operation, a non-uniformed deputy stepped into the crosswalk to see whether oncoming motorists would appropriately yield the right of way.
A total of 36 citations were issued during the operation. 25 citations were issued for failing to yield to the pedestrian in the crosswalk, 8 were for cell phone violations, 1 for an illegal U-turn and 2 for failing to stop at a red light.
Traffic Sergeant Scott Shoemaker reminds drivers and pedestrians that pedestrian safety is a two-way street.
“Drivers need to come to a complete stop at crosswalks and yield to pedestrians,” said Shoemaker. “Pedestrians need to do their part by remaining alert when crossing and not being distracted by using their cell phone. As a pedestrian, you can never assume that the driver sees you. You may have the right-of-way, but for your safety always make eye contact with the driver. Make sure that they see you.”

The problem is that you stop for the pedestrian and the cars behind you honk, flip you off then tailgate you. It’s ridiculous!

now to perform the reverse, citing pedestrians for lunging out in front of cars and bicyclists who don’t walk their bikes across the cross walks.

And they really, really need to start on the people that do not stop at stop signs, some slow down and roll through and some just go through…this happens a lot at a school near my house, plus the parents that stop in the middle of the street and wait for their kids…
They need to hang out on Haskell or Centurion during the first week of school. They’ll run out of paper to write tickets on.
That should wake people up. The rules are simple. Peds have the right of way. So let them pass safely. Hey, go to Hollywood and Sunset Blvds and see how long it takes to turn! Thousands of people crossing constantly. Very risky trying to turn!

Once was at Valencia and McBean to turn right. Someone was crossing. The guy in second turn lane at my left got impatient and went; drove right in front of this woman as she’s crossing. I thought he was going to hit here. No freakin patience for what, saving a few seconds?
Glorious thing was though, a cop was behind me. He dealt with it. You don’t often get to see those moments.

Much better use of resources than DUI checkpoints and red light cameras. Hopefully, the police used this as an educational opportunity. I will never forget the speeding ticket I got in college when the citing officer pointed out all the potential situations around me that could have resulted in an accident and/or tragedy. One of the most valuable lessons I learned as a college student. A ticket is when you are doing something that could cause an accident and possible injury or death.
